Position Description Perform custodial work for the locations assigned, and upkeep of the exterior grounds to ensure cleanliness and safety, including snow and ice removal in winter months.
Work Location This position currently works on-site only.

Shifts
3:30 p.m. – 12 a.m., Monday‑Friday
12 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., Thursday‑Monday
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Daily
Clean entrances, restrooms, lobbies, locker‑room and shower areas, office areas, break rooms, common areas, conference rooms, and storage areas.
Change lamps as required.
Responsible for the upkeep and compliance of the storage/supply area and custodial closets.
Ensure the security of each facility and report any security or maintenance issues to immediate supervisor/lead.
Respond to emergency cleaning needs as directed by supervisor/lead.
Project Cleaning – all tasks are scheduled as appropriate for each facility
Deep cleaning of carpet, hard floor scrubs and recoats.
Deep cleaning of restrooms and locker rooms.
Detail Cleaning – as directed
High dusting (use of a ladder required)
Cleaning interior and exterior windows
Edges, corners and baseboards
Clean furniture as requested.
Scrub and recoat any flooring that has finish as directed.
Spot clean and extract carpet as directed.
Move furniture as necessary to perform cleaning tasks.
Perform light maintenance work on exterior grounds as directed.
Supervisor / Lead Responsibilities
Sweep and clean walkways and keep them clear of obstacles.
Remove snow and ice from entrances and walkways manually when requested.
Monitor the entrance and landscape areas to ensure they are free of trash and debris.
Working Conditions Indoor and outdoor work, exposure to chemicals, dirt, dust, and variable temperatures.
Required Qualifications Minimum Qualifications
Ability to read, write, follow oral and written instructions, and perform simple math calculations (in English).
Minimum Experience
1 year of custodial or housekeeping experience in a comparable cleaning organization.
Licenses / Certifications
Valid Driver’s License.
Equivalency
An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position may be considered.
Selection Process The examination/selection process may consist of a rating of training and experience, an oral exam or written exam (80%) and seniority (20%). Minimum passing score 70.00. At each step the department reserves the right to limit the number of applicants to be tested.
Background Check (Police) The City has determined that a thorough Minneapolis Police Department criminal background check is necessary for positions with this job title. Applicants must sign an informed consent allowing the City to obtain their criminal history information in connection with the position sought. Applicants who do not sign the informed consent form will not be considered for the position.
Drug And Alcohol Testing All job applicants must pass a pre‑employment drug and alcohol test once a conditional offer of employment has been made. Applicants will be required to sign a notification and consent form prior to undergoing testing. Applicants who do not consent to undergo drug and alcohol testing will not be required to do so and the City will withdraw the conditional job offer.
Medical Exam After a conditional job offer, candidates will be required to pass a medical examination which includes a physical screening.
Union Representation This position is represented by a collective bargaining agreement between the City of Minneapolis and Laborers Local #363. For more information on the terms and conditions of this agreement please visit: Laborers - City of Minneapolis.
Eligible List Statement The names of applicants who meet minimum qualification and who pass the screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for employment consideration. This list will be certified to the hiring manager who may use the list to fill a vacancy of the same job title. This eligible list will expire three months after it has been established.
Interview Selection The hiring authority reserves the right to determine the maximum number of candidates to interview from the established eligible list. If the hiring authority decides to interview others than by exam score order, they may select additional people to interview based on a candidate’s education or experience related to the field, work history, or skills uniquely related to the operational needs of the position.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of green cleaning chemicals and processes.
Knowledge of proper cleaning methods, equipment, and supplies.
Ability to operate power equipment such as vacuum cleaner, carpet extractor, walk‑behind auto scrubber, swing machine, power washer, restroom machine, baseboard edger.
Must be able to work independently in a non‑supervised environment.
Ability to perform custodial functions that comply with CIMS (Cleaning Industry Management Standards) standards for quality and quantity.
Knowledge of OSHA guidelines regarding safe procedures and operations for use of chemicals and handling of bloodborne pathogens, and all required PPE (personal protective equipment).
Ability to understand oral and simple written instructions (in English).
Ability to create and keep records related to timesheets, supply log or custodial log book.
Ability to lift and move heavy (up to 75 pounds) objects.
