ANIMALS: Adoption Event Dog Handlers in Miramar
Help dogs find their forever homes by volunteering at an adoption event with A Way Home for Dogs. Volunteers will hold a dog's leash and walk or sit under a canopy as the dogs move around the general area. All dogs are on a leash and no dogs are placed in enclosures, so there is a 1‑to‑1 dog‑handler ratio. This is a largely sedentary volunteer opportunity; chairs are provided under the event canopies.
Key Responsibilities
Hold a leash and supervise assigned dogs throughout the event.
Sit under a canopy or walk around the event with the dog.
Ensure the safety of the dog and attendees (no phones or headphones).
Assist in promoting dog adoption and answering basic questions, if comfortable.
Skills & Qualifications
Comfortable around dogs of all sizes and temperaments.
Able to follow strict safety rules.
Friendly and respectful to event attendees.
Training Provided On‑site training will be provided at the beginning of the shift.
Attire and Weather Considerations Wear comfortable clothing suitable for outdoor work, along with sun protection such as sunscreen and a hat. The event takes place outdoors with little or no shade.
What to Bring
Water and food if you prefer not to use the vegan options at vendors.
A treat pouch, if you have one.
Physical Requirements and Accommodations Ability to hold a dog leash with the loop around a wrist and grip the excess. Accommodations can be made for individuals with physical limitations. Volunteers with physical limitations should inform the Opportunity Coordinator at least 24 hours before the event. The space is wheelchair accessible and foldable camping chairs are available for those who cannot stand for long periods.
Waiver All volunteers must complete the A Way Home for Dogs waiver before their first shift. Sign the waiver electronically via the HandsOn Connect app. Volunteers who do not sign in will be automatically marked as not attending at midnight on the day of the shift.
Weather Policy The event will proceed rain, heat, or shine. If the host cancels, volunteers will be notified by text and email. Keep a working phone number in your HandsOn Connect account.
Photos Take as many photos as you wish and post them on social media. If you prefer not to be photographed, inform the A Way Home for Dogs team.
Note All volunteers are required to stay for the entire event. No phone or headphone use is permitted for safety reasons.
