Overview The Graduate Area Coordinator (GAC) is a graduate student staff position within Auburn University Housing. The role is live‑on, requires residence in the assigned area, and provides 20 hours per week of full‑time work, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. The appointment is for 12 months, with a start and end date in May or July, and can be renewed up to three consecutive years.
Compensation & Benefits • Graduate students receive $23,000 annually (Master’s) or $27,000 annually (Ph.D.). • Fully furnished on‑campus apartment with utilities, internet, and a graduate tuition waiver for in‑state and out‑of‑state tuition. • Unpaid student fees and distance‑education fees are excluded; distance programs are covered only if no on‑campus option exists. • One‑year appointment with the option to reapply.
Essential Functions Staff Supervision, Development, and Selection
Develop a team of Resident Assistants by coordinating weekly staff meetings and regular one‑on‑one meetings.
Review staff reports and respond appropriately.
Assist in managing the area office and ensuring all desk shifts are appropriately staffed.
Network and communicate with supervisors, colleagues, student staff, support staff, and students.
Facilitate educational workshops for staff at RA spring training, fall training, and in‑service trainings.
Assist with student staff selection, training, and evaluation of Resident Assistants under the Assistant Director’s direction.
Serve as a role model by abiding by University and AUH policies.
Administrative Responsibilities
Attend and participate in weekly GAC meetings.
Participate in one‑on‑one meetings with supervisor.
Facilitate opening and closing of halls each semester and during university breaks.
Maintain frequent contact with supervisors and department members, responding in a timely manner.
Assist in the facilitation of room changes and other operational functions.
Safety, Emergency Response, and Student Conduct
Serve in a 24‑7 on‑call rotation for hall staff and submit daily duty logs every eight weeks.
Respond, in coordination with professional Housing staff members, to incidents in residence halls.
Provide a referral agent to appropriate resources for students and staff.
Conduct well‑being checks with residents during and after incidents.
Participate in and facilitate fire drills each semester.
Monitor and respond to safety and security concerns.
Address student and parent concerns and resolve them satisfactorily.
Communicate all information to direct supervisor and others as appropriate.
Follow up with residents concerning policy violations or other concerns.
Facilitate Residential Education Seminars.
Student/Community Development
Provide active leadership in developing a sense of community within the hall(s) and area.
Monitor the planning, implementation, and evaluation of community activities and bulletin boards.
Serve as a resource to individual staff members and students.
Advocate for various groups of students and personnel.
Manage a community development budget, purchase supplies within Purchasing Card guidelines, and submit accurate purchase summaries.
Adjudicate conduct cases for behavior management in the assigned area.
Pre‑Professional and Career Development
Participate in department‑wide professional development activities.
Attend and participate in monthly in‑service trainings.
Serve on at least one departmental committee.
Minimum Qualifications
Current Auburn University graduate student.
Must work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Strong written and oral communication skills, financial management skills, maturity, and sound judgment.
Evidence of leadership skills and the ability to supervise people.
Background check required; no outside campus employment allowed.
Educational Requirements Hold a bachelor’s degree and be enrolled as a full‑time graduate student at Auburn University. The GAC may not take more than nine credit hours per semester and may not be enrolled in academic classes during the summer unless eligible through Temporary Employment Services (TES).
Preferred Qualifications
Residence hall leadership experience and/or a graduate degree in higher education, counseling, psychology, or education.
Pay Rate $23,000 annually ($1,916.67 monthly). 20 hours per week. City: Auburn, Alabama.
