Job Overview As a Pet Stylist at Petco, you will be responsible for providing professional grooming services to our valued customers' pets. Your expertise and attention to detail will ensure each pet receives exceptional care, leaving them looking and feeling their best.
Responsibilities
Under moderate to limited supervision, perform professional grooming services including bathing, drying, brushing, haircuts and styling, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and gland cleaning following pet‑parent instructions, breed standards, and company policies.
Operate and maintain grooming instruments such as clippers, blades, shears, brushes, and dryers.
Prioritize the well‑being and safety of every animal in the salon, monitor pets for signs of discomfort, illness, or injury, and promptly report concerns to owners and store management.
Evaluate individual needs of each pet, considering coat type, skin condition, temperament, and other factors.
Interact professionally with pet parents, provide optimal customer service, address grooming inquiries, offer recommendations, and resolve questions or concerns promptly.
Educate pet parents on grooming and at‑home care practices and products that promote overall well‑being of the pet.
Maintain a clean and safe grooming area and salon; disinfect and sanitize tools and equipment; perform daily and weekly cleaning duties per Petco hygiene and sanitation policies, including cleaning filters, vents, and drains as assigned.
Utilize knowledge of Petco’s grooming policies, standards, and guidelines to ensure safety, quality, and consistency in all activities and maintain grooming salon standards.
May train, support, and supervise entry‑level trainees in the absence of a Grooming Salon Leader.
Qualifications
Successful completion of the Pet Stylist Apprentice program with Petco or prior experience as a professional groomer and/or completion of a technical grooming training program.
High‑school diploma or GED preferred; not required.
Ability to exercise independent judgment and problem‑solving skills using grooming techniques to resolve routine to moderately complex situations with some guidance.
Results‑driven with commitment to productivity, performance, and ownership of role.
Strong attention to detail, ensuring grooming services are executed accurately and to the highest standards.
Genuine passion for animals and desire to continue a career in pet grooming.
Expert knowledge of various dog breeds, grooming requirements, common health issues and behaviors.
High level of proficiency in breed‑specific cuts, styling techniques, and grooming standards.
Strong verbal and written communication skills for interactions with pet parents and grooming team members.
Capability to handle pets of all sizes and temperaments with care and empathy.
Availability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as required by the grooming schedule.
Work Environment The majority of duties are performed indoors in the grooming salon. The role requires bending, kneeling, lifting up to 30 pounds, and standing for extended periods. Exposure to heights using a two‑step ladder or other tools for cleaning and maintenance may occur. The environment can be noisy and wet. The job involves direct contact with pet parents and their dogs for most of the time, with occasional collaboration with other salon partners.
Salary Hourly rate: $15.00 – $22.50 (salary or hourly may be reflected in the posting). Pay will vary by location, level of experience, and applicable state or local minimum wage laws.
