$49,000 - $57,000 annually (Based on experience)

Position Summary The Volunteer Manager at BRHS is accountable for recruiting, training, and guiding volunteers in alignment with the organization's mission and values. Upholding the dignity and rights of every animal, the Volunteer Manager fosters a culture of respect and care within the volunteer team, including group volunteers and youth service participants.

Duties and Responsibilities

Cultivate meaningful engagement with BRHS volunteers by recruiting, training, and mentoring them. Serve as the primary point of contact for all volunteer-related matters.

Maintain and update handbooks, forms, and training materials for volunteers regularly. Conduct training and onboarding sessions for new volunteers to ensure their preparedness.

Lead and facilitate volunteer groups from external organizations. Ensuring proper coordination with volunteers.

Manage the recruitment, retention, and development of volunteers, ensuring their active participation. Arrange the annual volunteer appreciation dinner and other engagement activities to foster a sense of belonging.

Provide ongoing learning opportunities for volunteers to keep them informed about the organization's activities. Assist staff in identifying volunteer projects through needs assessment and promote awareness of the volunteers' role.

Ensure all volunteers interacting with animals have completed animal handling training and adhere to safe handling protocols at all times.

Handle all administrative tasks associated with the volunteer program, including maintaining databases, inventory management, processing applications, and necessary paperwork.

Assist in the planning, organization, and execution of special events, including fundraisers, community outreach programs, and awareness campaigns, by coordinating logistics and ensuring a smooth and successful event experience for attendees and volunteers.

Supervise and provide guidance to a youth service volunteers, ensuring their active participation and adherence to assigned tasks while fostering a positive and inclusive environment that promotes teamwork and personal development.

Maintain a professional and friendly demeanor, delivering excellent customer service. Foster collaboration with staff members and volunteers to create a harmonious work environment.

Animal handling is a part of the responsibilities, and specific attention should be paid to the safety and well‑being of volunteers during their interactions with the animals.

Undertake any other duties assigned to ensure the smooth operation of the organization.

Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree preferred

3 years of relevant experience required

Previous experience in an animal shelter preferred

Experience with Volgistics

Basic Microsoft Office skills including Microsoft Word and Excel

Must embrace the mission of Blue Ridge Humane Society

Strong interpersonal and writing skills

Strong organizational skills; ability to follow through on tasks and goals

Must have a good sense of humor and enjoy working in a relaxed office environment

Highly motivated and self-directed

Ability to work with a diverse population and establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with the public, donors, volunteers, staff and management in a respectful and courteous manner.

Good judgment when dealing with the public, decision making, and dealing with confidential information.

Ability to effectively handle difficult interpersonal situations, including tactfully handling of angry and upset individuals when necessary.

Ability to communicate sensitively and respectfully with a diverse group of individuals as well as staff.

Flexibility and desire to work in a fast paced, changing environment.

Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Must have the ability to lift and carry small parcels, packages and other items, to walk short distances, and drive a vehicle to deliver and pick up materials.

This individual may be working with potential biohazards related to animal exposure (airborne allergens, contact reactions) and may be exposed to animal diseases and/or diseased animals. Must be able to work safely with a variety of cleaning materials.

Must love animals AND people!

Must be willing to give permission for a background check and a DMV report. Must possess a valid unrestricted driver’s license with a driving record acceptable by Blue Ridge Humane Society’s insurance carrier. May be asked to submit to drug testing during employment.
