Job Description A Bakery Deli Manager is a friendly, enthusiastic person who enjoys serving and leading our Bakery Deli teammates. This role is responsible for a variety of complex tasks within the company. The Bakery Deli Manager supervises the day‑to‑day Bakery Deli activities, ensures overall performance, identifies staffing needs, manages schedules, and develops operational action plans while mentoring the team.
Responsibilities
Develop and achieve department budgets and targeted sales.
Excel in guest service by developing a guest service program for all department teammates.
Initiate recommendations regarding hiring, firing, discipline, promotion, and evaluation of department personnel.
Conduct department meetings to review merchandising, sales planning, and operational problems while keeping teammates informed of matters that affect them.
Train and retrain all department personnel as necessary.
Develop a weekly labor schedule and budget for all department teammates for approval by the Store Manager.
Develop weekly display plans for merchandising and ad promotions to:
Ensure displays are full
Emphasize color contrast
Rotate product
Group commodities
Set displays to the season
Allocate adequate space based on movement, capacity, and profitability
Be observant of security problems and develop methods of prevention.
Supervise:
Preparation for receipt of merchandise
Checking loads for quality, shortage, overage, and code dating of cases
Sorting cases by quality
Storage of inventory
Verification of merchandise against the invoice
Supervise:
Cleaning of department floors, mirrors, bins, tables, cooler, shelves, production equipment, scales, cases, and racks
Safe use of cleaning equipment and chemicals
Training department team on the proper use of slicer, oven, fryers, and mixers
Training department team on proper cleaning
Understanding and following the Lock‑Out‑Tag‑Out policy
Understanding the use of Temp Logs and 2‑hour holding temps
Assuring safety of self, guests, and teammates by understanding and practicing store safety rules and notifying the Store Manager of any potential hazard immediately
Supervising safety procedures for baler, case cutter, pallet jack, forklift, knife, garbage disposal, juicer, pineapple corer, scales, and wrapper (must be 18 years or older to operate pallet jack, forklift, and baler)
Counting and recording individual items of merchandise for inventory
Computing the retail price from cost, completing price changes, PLU file and scale system maintenance, and manual price labeling of merchandise without an UPC code
Supervising movement of damaged, unusable, or returnable products from shelves to the backroom, returning damage to the warehouse for credit, and re‑processing product for sale or marking down price
Supervising proper case opening and product stacking techniques to prevent damage to product
Supervising changing of signs, light bulbs, tags, and price markers in the department
Communicating with the Store Manager on problems, recommendations for change, and merchandising decisions
Adhering to FIFO stocking rules, consistently rotating product on the sales floor
Using correct channels to request credits on any less than perfect product, and recording invoice and credit information on an almost daily basis
Supervising the checking of case and cooler temperatures four times daily
Supervising the preparation, display, and packaging of all products in the deli department
Performing miscellaneous tasks assigned by the Store Manager, substituting for absent teammates, and performing any additional tasks needed during peak periods
Work Environment
Inside work with extreme variations in heat, cold, dust, humidity from compressors, cooler, freezer, equipment, and preparation area
Qualifications Required
Must be 18 or older
Basic mathematical ability (add, subtract, multiply, divide, and count)
Able to give and receive complex verbal instructions or descriptions to and from supervisors and teammates
Able to read and write instructions, labels, printed paper, and forms
Good interpersonal communications
Food Safety Certification
Preferred
High school diploma or equivalent
Prior deli experience
Prior supervisory experience
