Job Responsibilities Position Summary:

The Certified Peer Specialist has lived experience with mental health, substance use or co‑occurring needs, is in recovery, has formal training in the peer specialist model, and has passed the State of Wisconsin certification exam or will become certified within one year of hire. Peer Specialists work 1:1 with individuals enrolled in community‑based Peer Specialist programs who are beginning their recovery process, using their lived experience to engage and role‑model recovery during each interaction. The role includes coaching and mentoring to promote wellness, purpose, relationships, and problem‑solving skills, helping individuals improve quality of life and navigate the system of care.

Essential Functions

Link individuals to a variety of self‑determined supports and services, including case management, psychiatry, therapy, mutual aid groups, natural supports, and other healing activities that contribute to recovery.

Have contact with individuals at least four times per month; two contacts must be in person.

Provide 1:1 peer support services in the community, including home visits.

Offer a strength‑based review of an individual's abilities, strengths, and assets.

Encourage individuals to become experts of their own experiences and develop choice in service participation.

Explore goals and priorities with the participant and collaborate on a support plan.

Support navigation of care systems and encourage communication with other service providers for maximum self‑determination.

Complete Crisis Plans and document activities per funding source.

Maintain accurate documentation and case files following agency policy, regulations, and applicable laws; document progress notes in the electronic record.

Work with collateral and community contacts to promote continuity of care with written consent.

Participate in visits as needed to engage participants in recovery.

Assisting participants in stabilization and recovery processes.

Provide educational discussions with small groups of participants.

Facilitate psychosocial or other self‑help, recovery‑based groups to recognize and understand early triggers and develop prevention strategies.

Use active listening and positive communication skills.

Attend and participate in staff meetings and weekly supervision.

Attend in‑service training and conferences as required.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Perform other job‑related duties necessary to carry out the responsibilities of the position.

Other duties will be determined by the supervisor.

Job Qualifications Minimal Qualifications:

High school or GED/HSED; graduate of state‑certified Peer Specialist training; possess current Certified Peer Specialist certification (or obtain it within the first year of employment); strong written and verbal communication skills; personal experience with mental health and substance use needs and knowledge of recovery principles; meet WCS and contractor requirements for background checks, driver’s record, and references. Valid driver’s license and sufficient insurance are preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Computer skills; accurate documentation; ability to meet deadlines; knowledge of substance use issues and mental health needs.

Other Job Information (if applicable) Work Relationships and Scope:

Contact with case managers, therapists, probation agents, treatment teams, educational staff, families, and community resources.

Working Conditions:

Some desk work with a computer; 40 hours per week; flexible schedule may include evenings and weekends.
