REPORTS TO:
Ferry Boat operator
LOCATION:
Inchelium, WA
Basic Functions This is a Non-Exempt position. This as an on call position, applicants must be prepared to report to work within the hour of receiving notification. The SN Deckhand will assists in the operation and maintenance of the Inchelium/Gifford Ferry. Position functions as a deck hand on the Columbian Princess.
Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Training:
Requires a High School Diploma or GED.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Requires Washington State Driver’s License.
Requires Agility for movement on the ferry when underway.
TRequires the ability to work schedule demands working weekends and holidays.
Must live in area or able to relocate to area.
Must pass the training for deck hands given by the deck hand on duty.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Requires ability to safely start all 4 engines of the ferry boat and untie ferry boat from the pilings and ramp at the beginning of each morning shift never leaving the ferry boat unattended.
Requires ability to unplug shore power at beginning of shift.
Must block the wheels of the first and last vehicles parked in the middle lane of the ferry before ship movement.
Ability to manually lower the apron security chain and ramp to the level of the ferry deck to commence and supervise the loading and unloading of vehicles entering and leaving the Columbian Princess.
Required to keep ferry deck and landings free of debris, snow, ice and does general housekeeping on each shift to ensure the ferry boat is clean at all times.
Must make periodic inspections of cables, batteries, running gear, winches and assist Ferry Maintenance technician in general maintenance when required.
Must accurately complete daily engine log readings and reports any mechanical problems to the Ferry Maintenance technician and the Ferry Boat Operator as soon as possible.
Requires the ability to secure ferry boat to pilings and ramp on the Inchelium Side and plug in shore power at the end of each night shift.
Assists ferry boat operator in positioning docks by securing ferry to docks, guides the operator by using hand signals when required, and untie ferry from docks when positioning is complete.
Must ensure safety of all passengers and vehicles.
May be required to manually push stalled or stuck vehicles off the ferry boat.
Must be alert and safety conscious at all times.
Ability to lift 50 to 75 lbs.
Note: Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.
TRIBAL MEMBER AND INDIAN PREFERENCE WILL APPLY; PREFERENCE WILL ALSO BE GIVEN TO HONORABLY DISCHARGED VETERANS WHO ARE MINIMALLY QUALIFIED.
If required of this position, you must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ Vehicle Insurance. In addition, this position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances. If applicable, these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
