Position Summary The Power Generation Mechanic is responsible for performing the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of generators, light towers, and power distribution systems. This role’s location is flexible – it can be based at an EnerStar facility but will involve frequent travel to customer sites and remote job locations as needed. By executing preventive maintenance programs and responding to unscheduled outages, the Mechanic helps ensure fleet readiness, efficient operations, and reliable service delivery to customers, minimizing downtime and maximizing equipment utilization. This position also supports Power Gen’s strategic goal of reducing third‑party rentals and optimizing owned assets by keeping equipment in optimal working condition.
Core Duties & Responsibilities
Safety & Values: Prioritize safety in all tasks, strictly follow company, OSHA, and client‑site safety requirements, and champion EnerStar’s core values in all professional activities.
Equipment Maintenance: Perform preventive maintenance, emergency repairs, and major overhauls on generator sets (gensets), diesel engines, alternators, switchgear, and power distribution systems to ensure optimal performance.
Troubleshooting: Conduct diagnostics on diesel engines, electrical systems (e.g., 12/24 VDC control circuits and 480V/600V AC power), hydraulic systems, and control systems to identify and resolve equipment issues effectively.
Fleet Optimization Support: Assist in the company’s fleet optimization strategy by prioritizing rebuilds or repairs for high‑demand assets and helping to retire obsolete equipment as directed.
Inventory & Parts: Work with procurement and logistics to ensure the availability of required parts, tools, and consumables, enabling efficient and timely repairs.
Operational Records: Maintain accurate service documentation – including maintenance logs, repair records, downtime reports, and compliance forms – to support operational transparency and regulatory compliance.
Collaboration: Coordinate with logistics, sales, and operations teams to meet and exceed customer service commitments, communicating equipment status and requirements clearly across teams.
Customer Support: Provide on‑site support for field deployments and emergency responses, delivering reliable temporary power solutions and promptly restoring equipment to service for customers.
Other Duties: Perform other related tasks as required or assigned to support overall Power Gen operations and objectives.
Travel Requirements The individual in this role must be willing and able to travel regularly as required by EnerStar Solutions. Travel to customer sites, other Power Gen hubs, and emergency response locations is expected as needed to fulfill job duties.
Job Demands / Environment
Physical Requirements: This position involves frequent lifting (must be able to lift 50 pounds), bending, climbing, walking, standing for extended periods, and working in confined spaces. Candidates must have the physical ability to safely perform these tasks.
Medical Fitness: Due to the nature of the work and safety protocols, candidates must be medically fit to handle physically demanding tasks and work in varying environmental conditions. Pre‑employment and periodic medical evaluations may be required.
Work Conditions: Outdoor work in extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow, wind) and exposure to dust, noise, and other environmental factors is common.
Education
High school diploma or equivalent.
Technical school certificate or certifications in diesel mechanics, electrical systems, or small engine repair are desired (e.g., ASE Diesel Certification).
Experience
3+ years of experience as a generator mechanic, power generation technician, or similar role working with diesel engines and power distribution equipment.
Demonstrated proficiency in diesel engine and electrical system troubleshooting and repair. Experience with hydraulics and control systems is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Technical Mastery: Comprehensive knowledge of power generation equipment and systems – including mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic components – and the ability to apply this expertise in maintenance and repair tasks.
Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with other technicians and staff to complete complex tasks and achieve department goals.
Problem‑Solving: Skill in diagnosing mechanical and electrical problems and executing effective solutions quickly to minimize downtime.
Compliance: Familiarity with industry standards and regulations (NEC, OSHA, NFPA, etc.) and a commitment to adhere to safety and compliance guidelines at all times.
Organization: Capability to prioritize workloads, manage time efficiently, and maintain readiness of the generator fleet by planning maintenance and recording work performed.
Communication: Clear and effective communication skills for interpreting work orders, documenting repairs, and collaborating across teams (operations, sales, management).
