Residential Construction Carpenter – Habitat for Humanity of Omaha
Location: Omaha, NE
Salary: $55,000.00 – $80,000.00 (annually)

Description The Residential Construction Carpenter reports to the Senior Construction Supervisor. The Habitat for Humanity of Omaha Construction team primarily completes three phases of new home building: framing; installation of exterior siding, storm doors, porch railings, and building decks; and installation of interior doors, trim, and cabinets. This position can be entry‑level with minimal skills or an experienced role capable of working independently. The entry‑level will receive on‑the‑job training from the Senior Construction Supervisor and skilled team members. Each level receives instruction and gains exposure in one or more areas of HFHO’s construction program. Each Construction Carpenter will be assigned to one primary construction team but may assist other teams as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Complete tasks successfully assigned by the Senior Construction Supervisor and experienced team members within allotted time‑period.
Learn to read and work from blueprints, technical manuals, charts, and schematics.
Develop skills to safely operate and maintain a variety of construction tools.
Use equipment, tools, supplies, and materials responsibly to remain within project and team budget.
Acquire understanding of project management application and record completed work at day’s end.
Show up to work on time and be prepared for the day.
Maintain good communication and cooperative relationships with all other HFHO staff, departments, project teams, and contractors.
Check HFHO email account at least once per day.
Complete other tasks as assigned.
Safety
Observe safety requirements and safe work practices and methods as required.
Complete OSHA 10 certification within one year of employment start date.
Complete First Aid/CPR training within six months of employment start date.Maintain project safety in accordance with HFHO Safety Policy and OSHA Standards.
Ensure volunteer compliance with the project and site safety plan.
Ensure contractors, vendors, material providers, and visitors comply with HFHO safety practices and OSHA Standards.
In event of an accident, determine if it is an emergency and take appropriate steps to ensure the safety of the individual, i.e., dial 911 if necessary and fill out an accident form in all cases.
Volunteers
Provide work assignments and instruction for volunteers under the direction of site supervisor.
Ensure that volunteers and family partners have a fulfilling experience.
Quality And Resources
Assist with the construction of each project in accordance with the HFHO plans, specifications, current edition of the IRC, and accepted industry standards of practice.
Maintain and protect all tools, equipment and materials.
Return tools to assigned vehicle or proper storage location at the end of each day.
Maintain a clean and organized jobsite and vehicle.
Ensure quality work per HFHO’s standards.
Practice good stewardship with HFHO’s resources.
Maintain assigned vehicle in good working order. Coordinate any service needed with the Construction Maintenance Supervisor.
Schedule
Assist Senior Construction Supervisor and rest of construction team to meet the project schedule.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications
Ability to perform each previously stated duty satisfactorily. The requirements and expectations listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and ability required to succeed as a Residential Construction Carpenter.
Education
Minimum high school diploma or equivalent. Previous or current enrollment in construction education or training program preferred.
Experience
Basic knowledge of methods, materials, tools, safety practices, and equipment used in the homebuilding trade is preferred.
Skills
Good communicator.
Strong team skills are essential.
Must be able to read a tape measure, level and follow written and verbal instructions.
Proficiency in basic mathematics and conversion of measurements required.
Computer literacy necessary.
Valid driver’s license and excellent driving record essential.
Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and sit, use their hands to finger, handle, and maneuver or feel objects, tools or controls. They must reach with their hands and arms, climb or balance themselves; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; must be able to talk and hear. The employee must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds or more. Vision requirements are that the employee must see well, either naturally or with correction, and must have good peripheral vision. The employee must be able to hear well either naturally or with correction.
Work Environment The employee will predominantly be working outside. There is frequent exposure to wet, hot, cold, and/or humid conditions. The employee must be comfortable safely climbing a ladder to a second level height. The employee frequently works near heavy machinery, power tools, and saws. At times, the noise level may be very loud. The worksite terrain may be rough and uneven. The employee will need to be adaptable and adjust work assignments depending on the number of volunteers that arrive.
