Position Summary Sprinkler fitters are pipe fitters who specialize in fire protection installation and repair of sprinkler and hose systems, fire mains, underground systems, and underground closed valves. They create, maintain, inspect, and modify new or current sprinkler systems within homes, commercial buildings, and other areas where sprinkler systems are necessary. In this field, you need strong problem‑solving and critical‑thinking skills, as well as an extensive understanding of plumbing codes and regulations.
Core Responsibilities
Inspect and test systems, repair defective, worn, or broken parts, perform National Fire Protection Association inspections and testing on existing systems or new installations.
Select pipe sizes and materials, measure and mark pipes for cutting and threading, assemble and secure pipes, tubes, and fittings, turn off existing systems to secure new pipes, weld and solder pipes to create joints and attach pipes to fixtures.
Layout drawings of full‑scale piping systems, cut and bore holes in pipes according to blueprints and specifications.
Clean and modify current sprinkler systems.
Troubleshoot issues and resolve system problems.
Maintain good physical strength and agility, lift and climb with heavy loads.
Apply practical engineering applications and NFPA, plumbing, and code knowledge.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED.
Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Sprinkler Fitter or in a related field.
Valid Sprinkler Fitter license or certification, or eligibility to obtain one.
Proficiency in installing, testing, and maintaining sprinkler systems.
Knowledge of fire protection systems, plumbing, and pipefitting techniques.
Ability to lift and move equipment and materials weighing over 50 lbs.
Capability to work in various physical conditions, including confined spaces and elevated areas.
Familiarity with tools and equipment used in sprinkler fitting, such as pipe cutters, threaders, and wrenches.
Understanding of local, state, and national fire codes and regulations.
Ensure all work is performed in compliance with safety standards.
Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with clients, team members, and stakeholders.
Strong troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills to address and resolve system issues.
Reliable and able to work independently or as part of a team in a fast‑paced environment.
Must pass pre‑employment background checks and drug screenings, with ongoing compliance throughout employment.
Willingness to work flexible hours, including potential on‑call shifts and overtime as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
Fluent in Spanish preferred.
NICET Certification in Fire Protection Systems or equivalent advanced certification.
5 or more years of experience in sprinkler fitting or related fire protection systems.
Experience with modern sprinkler system technologies, including wet, dry, pre‑action, and deluge systems.
Proven track record of delivering excellent customer service and managing client relationships effectively.
In‑depth knowledge of local, state, and national fire codes and regulations, including recent updates and changes.
