Diesel Mechanic – Apple Valley Waste (AVW)
Apple Valley Waste (AVW) is a dynamic and rapidly growing regional waste management company that operates across 10 locations in the mid-Atlantic region. We are seeking an experienced Diesel Mechanic to join our fleet maintenance team, ensuring our waste collection vehicles and heavy-duty equipment run smoothly and efficiently.
Position Overview As a Diesel Mechanic, you will manage diagnostics, repair, and preventive maintenance for diesel engines in waste management trucks and heavy equipment. This role offers long‑term career potential in a growing company.
Key Responsibilities
Vehicle Maintenance:
Perform diagnostic tests, maintenance, and repairs on diesel-powered waste management trucks and heavy equipment, including rear-load, front-load, and roll‑off trucks.
Preventive Care:
Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance services, including engine checks, fluid changes, brake adjustments, and tire replacements.
Repairs and Replacements:
Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues and replace worn or damaged parts such as brake systems, engines, hydraulics, transmissions, and air systems.
Safety Compliance:
Ensure all repairs and maintenance activities adhere to safety standards, environmental regulations, and company protocols.
Documentation:
Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repair activities, including parts used, hours worked, and services performed.
Team Collaboration:
Work closely with other mechanics and supervisors to prioritize repairs and efficiently manage the fleet maintenance schedule.
Skills & Qualifications
Experience:
Working as a diesel mechanic, preferably with waste management, heavy equipment, or truck fleets.
Technical Knowledge:
Strong understanding of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and air brake systems; ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical issues.
Tools and Equipment:
Experience using diagnostic tools, mechanical hand tools, and power tools to complete repairs and maintenance tasks.
Certifications:
A valid CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) is a plus.
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required; additional technical training in diesel mechanics preferred.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift up to 70lbs and perform tasks in varying weather conditions, including working in tight spaces and on heavy equipment.
Attention to Detail:
Strong organizational skills and the ability to track and manage multiple repair projects simultaneously.
Problem-Solving:
Ability to quickly diagnose and solve mechanical problems, ensuring minimal downtime and maximum vehicle availability.
Additional Requirements
Must pass a background check and pre‑employment drug screening.
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and overtime, as needed.
Must comply with all safety and environmental regulations, ensuring a safe working environment for yourself and others.
