Summary Join HII as we keep the world's most powerful Navy afloat! Join our Elevator Support Unit (ESU) as a Marine Mechanic! This position will support contracted skilled trades work on Weapon Elevators and Aircraft Elevators and their systems on U.S. Navy ships. Travel within and outside of the continental United States may be required. This is a full‑time position, located in Chesapeake, VA.
What You Will Do
Perform maintenance and repairs on aircraft carrier elevators, cargo handling systems, vertical stores conveyors and associated equipment.
Provide direction and lead others as needed.
Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions to eliminate problems in minimum time. Apply comprehensive understanding of production and processes toward completion of assignments.
Manage one or more multiple jobs. Perform a variety of complicated and non‑routine tasks including duties outside of specialty to complete installation or work assignment.
Develop and use technical documents including controlled work packages, formal work processes and procedures, test documents, reports and task or trip reports. Schedule, report and brief customers and senior management.
What You Must Have
High School education, or Trade School or equivalent, and 6 years of related experience.
Ability to obtain medical clearance to wear a half‑face respirator.
Ability to obtain base access credentials within 60 days of start date and maintain credentials throughout employment.
Ability to travel when not assigned to local tasking.
Experience installing, maintaining and repairing structural and mechanical systems and associated equipment.
Experience using various power tools and measurement devices.
Ability to read, interpret and follow blueprints, technical drawings and/or technical manuals.
Knowledge of safety and quality control steps and procedures.
Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance and maintain clearance level throughout employment.
Ability to provide hand tools per trades designation.
Preferred / Bonus Points For
Experience related to maintenance and repair of shipboard aircraft elevator, ordnance handling equipment or vertical package conveyors.
Experience in the operation, repair and maintenance of marine hydraulic systems.
Prior shipboard experience.
Graduation from or completion of a vocational school, apprenticeship program or skilled trades certificate program.
Current or active DoD security clearance.
OSHA 10 Maritime Certification.
Physical Requirements Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes (no less than 30 lbs). Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces. Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels. May ride ships at sea for extended periods. May require wearing a respirator. Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
