Job Summary
Rollins College Museum of Art is seeking a service‑oriented Preparator and Exhibition Designer to join their team. The Preparator and Exhibition Designer is part of the curatorial team and works to ensure the care and proper display of the permanent collection at the museum and The Alfond Inn, as well as all temporary exhibitions. This role project manages all installations with primary responsibility for their security, care and design, and oversees the physical spaces where the collection is stored and displayed. The Preparator and Exhibition Designer serves as the primary liaison with the Facilities team on campus and works collaboratively to address issues related to museum galleries and outdoor sculpture installations. They also work closely with the Curator and the Collections and Exhibitions Manager to envision and execute the movement, installation, display, de‑installation, and maintenance of objects in the safest conditions, following best practices in the field.
Primary Responsibilities
Plan and install exhibitions and permanent displays at the Rollins Museum of Art, The Alfond Inn, and traveling exhibitions:
Work collaboratively with the Curator and Collections & Exhibitions Manager to develop design and installation plans, work schedules, and manage installation and de‑installation logistics for exhibitions.
Research and prepare cost estimates for fabrication, installation, and de‑installation.
Utilize exhibition design software to realize the aesthetic and interpretive vision of the Curator and artists.
Lay out, produce, and install exhibition graphics and object labels according to Museum style guide and branding.
Plan and coordinate with museum staff to ensure that all requirements (aesthetic, interpretive, accessibility, conservation, donor credit, security, etc.) are met.
Prepare objects for display (i.e. matting, framing, and creating mounts).
Design and fabricate exhibition furniture and casework.
Direct and maintain exhibition lighting.
Oversee exhibition packing and unpacking, manage the storage of crates, exhibition furniture, and materials.
Keep an updated inventory of supplies and materials for installations as well as for maintenance between change‑outs.
Local transport of objects and related materials (as needed).
Oversee the physical spaces where the collection is stored and displayed:
Monitor and improve design and display of installations at The Alfond Inn and the Museum and perform condition checks.
Gallery maintenance, including dusting of platforms, pedestals, vitrines, and lighting, paint touch‑ups, and other maintenance.
Oversee electronic and digital media technology, and other installation components.
Function as liaison with College Facilities and Alfond Inn staff regarding any needs for the collection and installations.
Maintain regular organization of the art vault and off‑site storage areas in consultation with the Collection and Exhibitions Manager.
Minimum Qualifications & Education
High School diploma or equivalent.
At least 3 years of related job experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in a museum or gallery.
College degree (in art, museum studies, or architecture/design).
Knowledge of graphic and exhibition design principles.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Excellent spatial and exhibition design skills.
Demonstrated proficiency of handling collections and loaned objects in a wide variety of media.
Ability to move or assist in moving heavy objects and ability to operate scissor lifts, pallet jacks, etc.
Demonstrated proficiency of practices and methods in mount‑making and ability to apply this knowledge with initiative and judgment, concern for detail, accuracy, and neat execution of work.
Demonstrated skills and knowledge of shop equipment and ability to perform various skilled and semi‑skilled tasks, including woodworking, brazing, and use of adhesives and fasteners, construction methods, and use of stationary and portable power tools.
Experience framing, taping, and painting walls.
Knowledge of audio‑visual technology.
Ability to create procedure manuals for managing time‑based or interactive media and serve as the point person to troubleshoot.
Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, InDesign, SketchUp, or another design platform a plus.
Ability to multi‑task, prioritize and work under deadline.
Emotional intelligence, positive, and team‑oriented disposition.
Work Schedule
The Preparator and Exhibition Designer role is a full‑time, 12‑month appointment, scheduled to work 37.5 hours per week, 1,950 hours per year.
Standard schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM. A 1‑hour unpaid lunch break is provided daily.
Flexible schedule or overtime, including evenings or weekends, may be required to meet business needs.
Work Environment
Campus‑based, front‑facing customer service position working in an office environment, in addition to hospitality space and exhibition galleries.
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and visual strain working on a computer.
Work requires physical labor such as lifting heavy materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
Requires 5% – 10% travel for courier trips.
