Pinto Valley is an open‑pit copper mine located at the west end of the historic Globe‑Miami mining district of central Arizona, approximately 80 miles east of Phoenix. Pinto Valley has been in operation since 1972 and has produced more than four billion pounds of copper. Acquired by Capstone from BHP in 2013, the mine is fully permitted through 2039 and a study is underway to potentially extend the mine life through 2050. Position Overview The Principal Advisor – Civil Projects provides senior technical and project leadership for large‑scale, multi‑year civil infrastructure projects across the operation. Reporting to the Projects Superintendent, this role is accountable for planning, execution, and delivery of complex civil works—including roads, tailings, water, and utilities—while ensuring alignment with Capstone Copper’s Asset Management Framework, HSE standards, and business objectives. The role partners closely with internal stakeholders and external contractors to deliver projects safely, on schedule, within budget, and to defined performance standards.
Position Responsibilities
Safety, Compliance & Governance: Champion Capstone Copper values while ensuring full compliance with MSHA requirements, environmental regulations, site policies, and the Asset Management Framework. Promote a safety‑first culture and ensure all employees and contractors are properly trained and certified.
Project Leadership & Delivery: Lead the planning, execution, and delivery of large‑scale civil projects from pre‑feasibility through construction and closeout. Develop optimized project execution plans aligned with asset life, performance targets, and approved feasibility or engineered designs.
Technical Oversight & Engineering Judgment: Provide senior technical guidance on civil design, materials selection, construction methodologies, and constructability for infrastructure including roads, tailings facilities, utilities, and water systems. Resolve complex technical and execution challenges as they arise.
Cost, Schedule & Risk Management: Establish and manage project budgets, schedules, and cost controls to ensure delivery within approved financial parameters. Identify project risks and implement mitigation strategies across scope, schedule, cost, quality, and safety.
Contract & Procurement Management: Administer contracts, subcontracts, and purchase orders in alignment with drawings, specifications, and commercial terms. Support procurement and sourcing of materials, equipment, and contractor services.
Stakeholder Engagement & Communication: Act as a key liaison with internal teams, contractors, regulators, and external stakeholders to ensure alignment, address issues, and support effective collaboration throughout the project lifecycle.
Team Leadership & Capability Building: Build, lead, and mentor internal and external project teams to ensure disciplined execution, technical excellence, and alignment with company values.
Continuous Improvement & Reporting: Identify opportunities to improve project delivery efficiency and lifecycle performance. Ensure accurate cost tracking, forecasting, and timely reporting of project performance, risks, and outcomes.
Position Requirements Required
Engineering or Project Management–related degree
Minimum 15 years of project management experience, including:
10+ years managing capital projects
3+ years in a supervisory or leadership role
3+ years in project planning or scheduling
Extensive experience delivering large, multi‑year infrastructure or civil projects
Strong working knowledge of mining and mineral processing regulations and standards
Advanced experience with SAP and CMMS/ERP‑based project controls
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Project, Visio)
Advanced scheduling capability (Gantt charts, resource leveling, multi‑level schedules)
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, and construction documents
Strong written and verbal English communication skills
Preferred
Experience supporting mining or heavy industrial operations
Familiarity with ISO‑aligned asset management and project governance frameworks
Demonstrated experience managing EPC, EPCM, or multi‑contractor execution models
All candidates will be required to complete a pre‑employment medical exam, drug and alcohol test, and background check. All positions require a pre‑placement physical examination to ensure candidates are 'fit for duty’. Additional training and/or testing may be required.
