Brief Overview
Provides care in a medical clinic under the direction of a provider. Performs administrative tasks to ensure that the medical office runs smoothly and successfully. Maintains a clean and safe environment and provides patients with information. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in The Methodist Mission, Vision and Values.
What You Will Do
Perform receptionist, clerical and data entry activities related to patient care such as scheduling appointments and Diagnostic Imaging exams, lab call backs, prior authorizations, retrieving medical histories, filling out patient paperwork and forms and answering and returning phone calls.
Proactively assist patients throughout the visit as needed, accompany patients to the exam/procedure room and respond to patient needs in a professional and friendly manner.
Collect and record patient data including height, weight, temperature, pulse, respiration rate and blood pressure, and basic information about the presenting and previous conditions.
May assist with physical examination preparations.
Perform EKGs, remove sutures/staples, and change sterile and non‑sterile dressings as directed.
Effectively collect and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis utilizing non‑invasive techniques, including urine, sputum and stool. Assist with undressing, cleansing and positioning patients for specific procedures.
Perform skin tests and venipuncture of skin for the purpose of withdrawing blood.
Administer medication and immunizations under the direction of the physician or advanced practice provider.
May authorize prescription refills and provide prescription information to pharmacies ordered and authorized by a physician or advanced practice provider.
Administer first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation in an emergency.
Prepare and clean exam/procedure rooms, instruments and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control.
Prepare orders, sort, store, and restock supplies for exam/procedure room. Duties may include ordering and maintaining stock of supplies.
Provide patient education and instructions under the authorization of the supervising physician.
Perform other duties as assigned or requested.
Education Qualifications
High School Diploma or Equivalent.
Technical Degree or Diploma in Medical Assistant.
Experience Qualifications
1‑3 years of Medical Assistant or similar experience.
Completion of an accredited medical assisting program may substitute for one year of experience.
Skills and Abilities
Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work with patients, patient families and physicians in a tactful and professional manner.
Ability to begin the patient visit with eye contact, smile, greeting, while using the patient’s name.
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Perform computer skills demonstrated by successful navigation of the EMR with appropriate documentation.
Demonstrated proficiency in motivational interviewing and teach‑back method techniques.
Ability to act quickly in emergency situations.
Licenses and Certifications
HEART SAVER – American Heart Association.
BASIC LIFE SUPPORT – American Heart Association.
AAMA Certified Medical Assistant – The American Association of Medical Assistants.
AMT Registered Medical Assistant – American Medical Technologists.
NCCT Medical Assistant – National Center for Competency Testing.
NHA Certified Clinical Medical Assistant – National Healthcareer Association.
NAHP Certified Medical Assistant – National Association of Health Professionals.
Physical Demands
Climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping and repetitive motion.
Must have good balance and coordination.
Exerting up to 50 lbs of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs of force frequently.
Requires close visual acuity including color, depth perception and field of vision.
Frequent invasive and non‑invasive patient contact.
Exposure to patient body fluids as well as hazardous or poisonous materials.
