Position Overview As an Operations Specialist in Animal Care, your role will be to ensure that proper animal care and husbandry is being provided for all companion animals and aquatic life in the Pet Care Center (PCC). You’ll be the primary resource regarding animal care and maintenance, supporting the PCC’s budgeted sales and shrink goals. Your focus is the safe, efficient, and high‑quality operation of the PCC in close partnership with the sales team to meet the needs of guests and their pets.

Position Responsibilities

Have a strong interest in animal welfare and possess a high level of knowledge of companion animal and aquatic care.

Ensure that all companion animals and aquatic life in the PCC receive appropriate care, including maintenance, incident reporting, and hourly health checks.

Process register transactions to create a great guest experience.

Be proficient in our selling model and support guest interactions as needed.

Ensure merchandise is stocked, priced, and displayed to create a great presentation.

Complete and apply training programs to maintain a high level of expertise and educate other PCC partners in animal care and maintenance.

Promote a positive culture of teamwork, inclusion, and collaboration.

Adhere to established operational guidelines, policies, and procedures.

Evaluate guest inquiries and refer to the Leader on Duty as needed.

Serve as the primary resource for guests and other PCC partners regarding all animal education and care.

Efficiently order companion animals, aquatic life, supplies, and merchandise to maximize sales, margin, and inventory.

Analyze departmental inventory data and recommend areas for improvement.

Perform routine housekeeping tasks to maintain the professional image of companion animal and aquatic areas.

Ensure proper handling and documentation for all relinquished and adoption animals.

Verify that animal‑related maintenance tasks are completed as outlined on the maintenance schedules.

Participate in all animal and aquatic‑related physical inventory counts.

Adhere to and promote established safety and loss‑prevention procedures.

Perform additional duties and projects as required or assigned.

Other Essential Duties

Utilize selling behaviors to provide an amazing guest experience.

Contribute to a safe environment through training and adherence to safety protocols.

Be part of a collaborative culture that centers around solving health and wellness needs of pets.

Engage in career development programs to support continued growth.

Basic Qualifications Minimum of one year of experience working with and/or caring for companion animals and aquatic life is required. Applicants must possess high‑level knowledge of companion animals and aquatic life and an aptitude for sales techniques. A professional appearance, strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, and a genuine interest in animals and their care are essential.

Certification Completion and maintenance of the Petco Animal Care Certification program is required.

Education/Skills High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required. Proficiency in basic mathematics, accounting relationships, and exceptional communication skills are necessary.

Supervisory Responsibility

Ensure the Pet Care Center opens and closes in accordance with established procedures.

Adhere to and promote safety procedures for partners, guests, and pets.

Work Environment Work is primarily indoors, with occasional pet carry‑outs and veterinary visits. The role requires bending, kneeling, moving merchandise (up to 50 lbs), and standing for long periods. A flexible schedule including evenings and weekends is required.
