WRAL is seeking an experienced, dynamic, and versatile Anchor/Reporter who is passionate about telling impactful stories across all platforms. This role involves anchoring newscasts, producing high-quality content, and delivering compelling live reporting from the studio and the field.

Overview The selected candidate will anchor our weekend morning newscasts and report on all WRAL platforms three days a week. Candidates must excel in writing, shooting, editing, and publishing news across television, digital, and streaming platforms, including WRAL.com, WRAL apps, WRAL News+, YouTube, and others. The ideal candidate embraces accountability journalism and community-focused storytelling, thriving in a fast-paced, evolving news environment. This position is designed for a journalist who is comfortable both in front of the camera and behind it—crafting stories from concept to completion.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions

News Presentation & Anchoring – Deliver news and information during live newscasts, special reports, and continuous coverage; anchor from both the studio and the field with the ability to ad‑lib and handle unscripted breaking news events; write and present news clearly, engagingly, and with journalistic integrity.

News Production & Content Creation – Produce, shoot, write, and edit stories for all WRAL platforms; develop original content and enterprise storytelling, particularly focusing on local relevance and accountability; utilize graphics and other visual elements to enhance storytelling clarity and impact; undertake other duties as assigned.

Live Reporting – Report live from breaking news scenes, special events, and locations across the community; conduct compelling interviews and provide insightful context on developing stories.

Collaboration & Editorial Contribution – Work closely with producers, photographers, and the editorial team to shape newscasts and digital packages; contribute ideas during editorial meetings and help shape news coverage.

Audience Engagement – Build and maintain a strong rapport with the WRAL audience through social media, community involvement, and public appearances; actively engage with viewers and respond to feedback professionally and courteously.

Research & Development – Research topics thoroughly to ensure factual and contextually accurate reporting; stay informed on current events, emerging issues, and industry best practices; participate in ongoing training to sharpen on‑air delivery and storytelling abilities.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field.

Minimum of 5 years of experience in broadcast journalism, including on‑air reporting or anchoring.

Exceptional verbal and written communication.

Strong editorial judgment and a commitment to ethical journalism.

Proficiency in news production tools and editing software.

Skilled in shooting and editing video using industry‑standard equipment.

Demonstrated ability to handle breaking news and live situations under pressure.

Experience using social media professionally to support storytelling and audience connection.

Deep commitment to public‑service journalism and community engagement.

High standards of accuracy, fairness, and integrity.

Strong sense of initiative and creativity.

Physical Demands

Extended periods of standing/sitting as needed for writing/reporting, conducting research, or supporting broadcasting functions.

Manual dexterity: frequent use of hands and fingers to operate computers, editing equipment, microphones, and monitors.

Occasional lifting and carrying of production equipment up to 25 lbs.

Strong eyesight and hearing required to monitor audio levels and video/image quality.

Mobility and stamina to move between studios and the newsroom as needed.

Analytical mindset to learn quickly and stay engaged in new tools, formats, and techniques for managing newsroom content.

Work Conditions

Primarily in a broadcast studio, newsroom, or digital media production space.

May require early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holiday shifts depending on news cycles, production schedules, and live streaming demands.

Fast‑paced, high‑pressure environment, especially during live broadcasts and breaking news events.

Must be able to multitask and adapt quickly.

Occasional fieldwork for live reporting, interviews, or event coverage, including outdoor settings in varying weather conditions.

Occasional travel within our coverage area as needed for research and reporting purposes.
