is seeking a motivated and dependable Utility Technician to support the construction, maintenance, repair, and operation of the District’s water, wastewater, and recycled water infrastructure. This entry‑level, full‑time, represented position performs routine to semi‑skilled physical work while gaining hands‑on experience across a variety of operational and mechanical functions essential to public utility services.

About the Role Under direct supervision, the Utility Technician assists with a wide range of field and facility‑based work, including installing and repairing pipelines, valves, hydrants, pumps, and treatment plant equipment. The role supports general construction and maintenance activities, operates hand and power tools, assists with mechanical repairs, and responds to emergency situations as needed.

This position is designed as a training role within the District’s Operations Department, providing opportunities for cross‑training, certification attainment, and career progression into Systems Operator, Utility Operator, or Mechanic classifications as skills and experience develop.

What You Will Do

Assist in the installation, maintenance, and repair of District infrastructure, including pipelines, valves, hydrants, meters, and treatment plant equipment

Perform general construction and maintenance work on District facilities, including concrete, plumbing, framing, roofing, and painting

Assist with mechanical repairs and preventive maintenance on pumps, compressors, engines, and related equipment

Excavate and shore trenches; backfill and resurface work areas; clean and restore job sites

Assist in servicing pump stations, chemical feed systems, telemetry systems, and related infrastructure

Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and light‑to‑heavy equipment as trained and certified

Monitor gauges, telemetry, and equipment readings and assist with basic data collection and recordkeeping

Support flushing, cleaning, and maintenance of collection and distribution systems

Follow safety policies and procedures, including traffic control, confined space entry, and use of protective equipment

Respond to emergency situations and participate in standby duties as required

What You Bring

Willingness to learn and perform a wide variety of construction, maintenance, and mechanical tasks

Ability to work safely in physically demanding environments and varying weather conditions

Strong teamwork skills and the ability to follow instructions and established procedures

Basic mechanical aptitude and interest in utility operations

Ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and vehicles safely

Attention to safety, reliability, and quality workmanship

Effective communication skills and a positive, professional attitude

Education and Experience Equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience performing laborer work in construction, mechanical, or maintenance‑related fields, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Valid California Class C driver’s license and ability to maintain insurability

Ability to obtain required certifications based on assignment (e.g., D1 certification, commercial driver’s license, CPR/First Aid, Confined Space Entry, SCBA) within specified timeframes

Ability to meet the physical, safety, and standby requirements of the position
