Position Summary The Maintenance Superintendent is responsible for leading and managing all maintenance activities to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of plant equipment and facilities. The role provides daily direction to maintenance teams, partners closely with Operations and Engineering, and drives continuous improvement in equipment reliability, downtime reduction, and maintenance processes. The superintendent ensures compliance with safety, food safety, and regulatory requirements while managing labor, contractors, and maintenance budgets.
Key Responsibilities Leadership & Supervision
Lead, coach, and develop maintenance supervisors, technicians, and support staff
Set daily and weekly maintenance priorities to support production needs
Ensure effective communication and coordination across shifts and departments
Enforce company policies, safety rules, and GMPs consistently
Maintenance Operations
Oversee preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs
Ensure timely response to equipment failures and production interruptions
Monitor equipment performance and downtime trends
Support troubleshooting of complex mechanical, electrical, and automation issues
Safety, Quality & Compliance
Ensure compliance with OSHA, food safety, GMP, and environmental regulations
Lead safety initiatives, incident investigations, and corrective actions
Ensure proper lockout/tagout, hot work, and confined space procedures are followed
Reliability & Continuous Improvement
Drive root cause analysis using tools such as 5‑Why and Fishbone (Ishikawa)
Partner with Project Manager on reliability improvements and capital projects
Improve PM compliance, spare parts strategy, and maintenance planning
Implement best practices to improve equipment uptime and asset life
Budget & Resource Management
Manage maintenance labor, overtime, and contractor usage
Control maintenance spending and track budget performance
Work with vendors and contractors to ensure quality and cost effectiveness
Collaboration
Partner with Operations, Quality, Projects, and Supply Chain
Communicate maintenance performance metrics to plant leadership
Support new equipment installations and start‑ups
Qualifications
5+ years of maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment (food manufacturing preferred)
2+ years of maintenance leadership or supervisory experience
Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and automation systems
Proven ability to lead teams and manage priorities in a fast‑paced environment
Strong problem‑solving and communication skills
Experience with CMMS systems
Knowledge of reliability‑centered maintenance (RCM)
Experience in union environments
Physical & Work Requirements
Ability to work extended hours, weekends, or on‑call as needed
Ability to walk, stand, climb, and work in industrial environments
