Residential Specialist - Magnolia Gardens Founded in 1980, Urban Resource Institute (URI) is the nation’s largest provider of domestic violence shelter services and a leader in supporting homeless families. Operating 24 shelters across New York City, URI provides 3,700 beds nightly in purpose-built shelters that offer trauma-informed services including counseling, childcare, case management, and more. URI’s Justice Initiatives extend support beyond shelter, offering programs in economic empowerment, legal advocacy, youth prevention, and abusive partner intervention. URI also develops permanent affordable housing as part of its long-term commitment to safety, stability, and healing.

Position Overview The Residential Specialist is responsible for direct service provision to residents. The Residential Specialist provides assistance and support to families with children residing in DHS facilities. In addition, successful candidates must have strong time management skills, be flexible and creative, and must be willing to support clients in a wide range of tasks and activities. The Residential Specialist must demonstrate sensitivity to issues related to homelessness.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Support clients to complete their activities of daily living.

Work directly with individuals to develop and achieve meaningful life goals.

Document information and assist in tracking data with logs and reports.

Maintain professional communication with other program staff.

Provide support and direct care to clients and help to maintain a safe and clean living/working environment.

Transporting clients to activities and appointments.

Maintain a safe and secure facility.

Attend staff meetings and training as required.

Respond to requests from residents.

Meet regularly with team.

Understand and follow emergency procedures, including fire safety procedures.

Sort and organize donations of food, clothing, etc.

Conduct room checks as needed.

Assisting with intake procedures as directed.

Distribute household supplies.

Keep activity logs.

Assist with bed utilization by helping with apartment preparation and cleaning.

Provide crisis intervention, mediate between residents when necessary.

Perform other duties as assigned supervisor.

Specifications for Education/Certifications/Licenses

High School Diploma or GED.

Required Skills and Experience

Minimum 1 year experience in a residential shelter.

Familiarity with DHS regulations and DHS Cares Reporting preferred.

Must possess a demonstrated ability in delivering client services including communication and listening skills, understanding of human interaction and personality development, the ability to write and record case documentation, and demonstrated skills in group counseling.

Must be computer‑literate and must have knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications.

Must have ability to be flexible of schedule as needed.

Excellent written and verbal skills are required.

Specifications for Physical Requirements

Will be required to read printed and handwritten materials.

Will be required to read information on computer screen.

Will be required to use computer keyboard and mouse.

Must be able to sit for extended periods of time.

Must be able to enter information in digital forms and spreadsheets.

Must be able to lift 10 pounds at times, occasionally reach and bend.

May require occasional work outside established working hours, including evenings and weekends.
