Job Title Social and Emotional Therapist

Reports To Principal

Job Goal Assists students in identifying and solving emotional and educational problems, and in adjusting to school and community life by providing strategies.

Performance Responsibilities

Implement programs which include initiating group and individual activities to assist in the academic and social skill acquisition and success of students.

Observes and analyzes student behavior and administers and evaluates screeners to determine students' needs.

Observes and analyzes the classroom environment to provide support for teachers and students.

Serve on student support teams and special education committees at assigned schools.

Analyze information gained through record reviews and interviews to determine environmental impact and appropriate resource needs.

Interview students and parents to discuss issues related to non-attendance and develop a plan of action.

Provide individual and/or group counseling in response to school-wide crises.

Participate in professional development activities aimed at current trends and best practices.

Administers age appropriate assessment methods and material to determine the needs of students.

Consults with teachers and other school personnel to obtain information regarding the reason for referral.

Gathers background information on the student's social history by conducting behavioral observations, making home visits, conducting interviews, and reviewing school records.

Serves as a member of the interdisciplinary assessment team assigned to each school and works as a team member in making placement decisions, developing intervention plans, and planning programs to meet the special needs of children.

Communicates case findings and recommendations to teachers and other school personnel as needed.

Provides in-service training and workshops for teachers and staff regarding mental health issues and proper procedures for the identification and referral of students.

Organizes and conducts specialized programs to include parent training classes and student support activities.

Acts as a member of the school crisis team to provide intervention to students as necessary.

Perform other duties as assigned.
