$52–$85/hour
Overview System One is seeking a highly motivated and resourceful Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to support the conceptual and preliminary design development of various reactor core components, reactor structures, and Nuclear Island components for the Natrium Generation IV Reactor. This role requires extensive experience in equipment design and will report to the Core Component Design Manager. You’ll be part of a high‑performing team of engineers and scientists focused on developing next‑generation advanced nuclear reactors.
Responsibilities
Coordinate and utilize inputs and requirements from Engineering and Project teams to produce equipment and component design solutions.
Provide planning and schedule input for design activities.
Develop testing documentation.
Perform scoping analysis and calculations for design options.
Interface with the team’s engineering analysis activities.
Present equipment and component design results for design reviews.
Lead design reviews and assess technical merits of solutions provided by team members.
Mentor junior engineers and subcontractors.
Support continuous learning and apply nuclear industry best practices to maintain high‑quality engineering design.
Proactively identify process change/enhancement opportunities.
Qualifications
B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent (preferred).
Minimum of 5 years of equipment/component design experience (relevant M.S. and Ph.D. degrees may count for up to 2 and 4 years respectively).
Proficiency in 3D CAD;
SolidWorks
preferred.
Experience with design of experiments and product testing.
Strong background in finite element stress analysis and mechanical analysis methods;
ANSYS
preferred.
Familiarity with
Design for Manufacturability (DFM)
and
Design for Assembly (DFA) .
Excellent writing, communication, and problem‑solving skills.
Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks concurrently.
Experience with design codes such as
ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section III or VIII
is desirable.
High attention to detail and integrity.
Ideal Candidate
Prior work in the nuclear industry with core assemblies (fuel and control assemblies).
SolidWorks
design experience.
Finite element stress analysis using
ANSYS
and first principles calculations.
Familiarity with
ASME Boiler Pressure Vessel Code Section III Division 5 .
Experience writing test requirements and developing nuclear product test campaigns.
Knowledge of
Flow Induced Vibration (FIV)
or
Comprehensive Vibration Assessment Program (CVAP) .
Experience writing design specifications.
Seismic analysis experience using response spectrum and time history modeling techniques per
ASCE 4, ASCE 7, and/or ASCE 43 .
