Responsibilities:
Copy‑edit and proofread articles, pages, and related materials for The New Yorker, suggesting editorial improvements to grammar, style, usage, logic, sense, tone, placement, and concision, and expertly spotting typos and bad breaks on final passes.
Proofread and clean digitized stories from magazine archives, ensuring no infelicities have been introduced in the conversion process.
Suggest engaging headlines and other display copy, following SEO guidelines and editorial best practices.
Coordinate with multiple stakeholders to prepare and schedule pieces for publication in The New Yorker’s content‑management system.
Additional duties as required or as assigned by manager.
Skills and Qualifications:
Experience as a copy editor, producer, or proofreader.
Strong editorial instincts, writing skills, and news judgment.
An eye for detail and an ear for voice.
Good communication skills.
Excellent time‑management skills.
Ability to meet deadlines while handling multiple tasks simultaneously.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Comfort learning new editorial systems.
Experience with a content‑management system (e.g., WordPress) for publishing Web content.
Experience with Google Docs and InCopy.
Familiarity with the history, style, and values of The New Yorker.
Willingness to work some early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Salary: $67,500 - $70,500
