Position Summary
The City of La Mesa is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Public Works Inspector to oversee projects, streamline operations, and support effective decision‑making within the Community Development Department. Applications will be accepted for the first 200 submissions only.
About the Department The Community Development Department includes Planning, Land Development, Building, Housing, and Code Compliance, working together to create a safe and healthy city through land use, permits, affordable housing initiatives, and code enforcement.
Key Responsibilities
Inspect construction projects to ensure compliance with City standards, local and state codes, and applicable regulations.
Conduct grading, infrastructure and stormwater inspections for private developments.
Verify construction quality, resolve issues, schedule inspections, maintain records, and collaborate with contractors, engineers, consultants, and other agencies.
Assist in reviewing plans, specifications, and punch lists; coordinate with developers and contractors.
Perform field and in‑office duties, including reporting, data compilation, and quality assurance.
Supervise contracted inspectors and manage related tasks for grant‑funded projects.
Ideal Candidate
Excellent organizational, multi‑tasking, interpersonal and public relations skills.
Experience reviewing plans, specs, codes, and ensuring construction compliance.
Leadership experience in planning, scheduling, and communicating with contractors, consultants, and the public.
Proficiency in record‑keeping, documentation, reporting, and computer software.
Strong problem‑solving skills for field conditions and public complaints.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or equivalent with specialized training in public works inspection, civil engineering, or related field.
Experience: 1 year of construction/public works engineering experience for Inspector I; 2 years for Inspector II.
License: Valid driver’s license.
Work Schedule Monday – Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; every other Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (City Hall closed on alternate Fridays).
Examination Process Applicants must submit an online application and supplemental questionnaire by the closing deadline of Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. The examination process may include interviews, performance tests, or written exams. Interviews scheduled for the week of February 16, 2026. Employment is contingent upon pre‑employment evaluation, including physical, drug and alcohol screen, and background investigation.
