Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Utility Locator to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for accurately identifying and marking underground utilities, including pipelines, cables, and communication lines. You’ll ensure the safety and integrity of excavation projects and respond promptly to emergency locate requests.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee daily installation operations, ensuring that projects are completed on schedule and within scope.
Accurately identify, locate, and mark existing underground infrastructure to prevent accidental damage during construction or excavation activities.
Receive, record, and complete locate requests within required timeframes (typically within 48 business hours).
Work safely in high-traffic and outdoor environments, using appropriate personal protective equipment and following company and regulatory safety standards.
Operate handheld locating devices and interpret readings with precision. Use maps, drawings, and digital tools (computer, laptop, iPad) to confirm utility paths.
Confidently read and follow maps, landmarks, and mile markers to reach assigned locations.
Provide timely updates on job progress and report any damaged, faulty, or tampered underground utilities immediately.
Collaborate with other departments during downtime and contribute to overall operational efficiency.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent; technical degree or certification in telecommunications or a related field is preferred.
Minimum 1 year of experience as a Utility Locator or in a related field.
High school diploma or GED required.
Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Ability to work independently and maintain a high level of self-motivation.
Comfortable working outdoors in varying conditions; must possess good physical stamina and stability.
Strong communication and listening skills.
Construction or telecommunications background preferred.
Technical Skills
Proficiency using electromagnetic and ground‑penetrating radar (GPR) locating equipment
Ability to read and interpret utility maps, blueprints, and as‑built drawings
Experience with GPS and GIS mapping systems
Competence using mobile devices and computer software for ticket management and reporting (e.g., One Call systems, tablets, field apps)
Knowledge of underground utility infrastructure (fiber optic, gas, electric, water, sewer)
Familiarity with color code standards for utility markings (APWA Uniform Color Code)
Basic understanding of excavation safety and damage prevention procedures
