Lateral Officer Incentives and Benefits Lateral Officer Incentives include a $30,000 hiring bonus for lateral corrections officers hired by the City of Puyallup. The incentive is paid $10,000 at hire, $10,000 after completion of Corrections Training Officer (CTO) program, and $10,000 after completion of probation (prorated repayment applies if separation occurs before three years of employment). Vacation and sick leave banks: 100 hours each upon CTO program completion. Salary and benefits: $7,193.94 - $7,517.64 monthly. The City offers competitive group insurance (medical, dental, vision, life, long-term disability).
Department and Work Environment The Puyallup Police Department is a growing, mid-sized agency with divisions including Patrol, Investigations, Professional Services, Corrections and Administration. The Corrections division includes a Captain and 16 corrections employees. Work is performed in the jail and outdoors in various weather conditions, requiring safe operation of a van or automobile.
Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
Receive prisoners from arresting officers and book into the jail facility; take pictures and fingerprints; complete records.
Search prisoners and secure their property; inventory belongings.
Apply required force to restrain prisoners when necessary.
Direct activities of trustees and/or prepare and serve meals; clean jail areas; perform related duties.
Issue jail clothing, bedding and personal items; escort visitors and prisoners to court; maintain jail standards.
Coordinate medical services for prisoners; administer medication under medical supervision.
Schedule and supervise recreation for prisoners.
Direct in-custody court video arraignments; coordinate with defendants, judges, court staff, defense attorneys and interpreters.
Maintain records; explain jail procedures to prisoners and citizens; ensure compliance with rules and provisions.
Maintain jail records, logs, and property; write reports and memorandums; provide testimony as needed.
Provide armed prisoner transports to various destinations.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Knowledge:
Rules and regulations concerning care and custody of prisoners; record keeping and report writing.
Ability:
Learn and enforce jail standards and department regulations; qualify with department-approved firearm; operate City vehicle safely in various weather conditions; restrain and transport prisoners safely; maintain records accurately; complete mandatory training; deal with the public courteously; communicate effectively in English; demonstrate physical strength and agility; establish positive working relationships; maintain regular attendance.
Experience and Education (Lateral-Entry)
Two years of corrections officer experience at a city, county or state incarceration facility, or five years of patrol officer experience with a city, county or state law enforcement agency.
If not currently employed as a corrections or police officer, no more than 24 months break in service.
Successful completion of the Washington State Correction Officers or Basic Law Enforcement Academies or an equivalent training program recognized by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission. Note: The Washington State Correction Officers Academy does not recognize the Washington State Department of Corrections (DOC) Academy as equivalent.
Special Qualifications
United States citizen, lawful permanent resident, or deferred action for childhood arrivals recipient.
Ability to read, write and speak English; valid Washington State driver’s license (or ability to obtain).
Physical Characteristics and Work Environment Requires physical ability to exert force and/or lift up to 70 pounds occasionally; ability to restrain prisoners; ability to move about, stand for extended periods, and operate manual tasks; occasional kneeling, crouching, bending, stooping or crawling; computer data entry involved.
Application Procedures and Selection Process Applications are accepted on a continuous basis to establish an eligibility register. Applications are screened for eligibility and tested. The selection process may include a competitive oral interview, written essay, and a thorough background investigation including a polygraph, with a physical examination and drug/alcohol testing as conditions of employment. A 12-month trial service period applies. Veteran’s scoring criteria may be applied per state law after the examination process.
