Position

Freelance Social Media Producer – temporary position (seven months)

Job Description

Freelance Social Media Producer with a passion for news will join our team to optimize the biggest stories of the day for social platforms. The producer will cover social media for three owned and operated stations – Boston, New York and Colorado. This role requires a hardworking journalist who thrives in a fast‑paced environment and has strong editorial judgment suitable for breaking news situations. The candidate must manage multiple tasks, stay aware of day‑to‑day news in three different markets, produce and edit engaging videos for TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X and Snapchat, and apply in‑platform tools and features to create content authentic to each audience. They will select the most newsworthy and shareable moments within larger news events, press conferences, interviews, articles and television segments, field content from anchors and correspondents, craft original social packages, write concise yet context‑conscious captions and titles aligned with the CBS News brand, and cover breaking news while working newsroom hours that may include nights, weekends and holidays. They will contribute to growing the assigned accounts in terms of followers, video views and engagement, and respond quickly when news breaks.

Candidate Qualifications

  • 2 to 4 years of social media or newsroom experience
  • Deep familiarity with social media platforms, audiences and best practices
  • Ability to write about a variety of topics in a strong, yet unbiased way
  • Strong writing skills with a demonstrated portfolio of published work
  • Strong producing and editing skills
  • Ability to quickly and accurately subtitle video for social, using both editing platforms and the text tools within TikTok and Instagram
  • Ability to work well with others under tight deadlines
  • Degree in journalism, communications or related field
