The Opportunity This position works out of our Abbott Park, IL location in the GES General Engineering Services division. It is a rotating 12‑hour night shift position, 4 nights on shift – 4 nights off. Hours are 6 pm – 6:30 am.

What You’ll Work On

Independently perform and understand hardware, operating systems and maintenance work on a variety of HVAC/R equipment and systems.

Work as a multi‑skill tradesperson, performing mechanical, pipefitting, building maintenance and other work as required, and may lead a crew of two or more tradespersons on larger projects.

Act as liaison and coordinator of work assigned to the crew.

Ensure GMP and safe‑work policies and procedures are followed and maintained.

Participate in work‑group team meetings, seeking methods and processes that improve productivity, reduce costs and increase customer satisfaction.

Perform diagnosis, ordering parts and installation on equipment such as motors, fans, valves, actuators, air‑conditioning units, compressors, pumps and more.

Carry out preventative and demand maintenance on all types of plant HVAC/R equipment.

Possibly install bearings, seals, belts and gaskets, using tools and test equipment.

Perform mechanical overhauls and preventive maintenance on plant HVAC equipment.

Apply HVAC/R theory to air‑handling systems.

Conduct brazing or soldering of heating and cooling coils.

Perform troubleshooting, mechanical repairs and installation of refrigeration equipment as per Abbott Engineering Standards.

Make safe and informed decisions on the use of resources and company policies.

Use CMMS functions related to refrigeration maintenance, PM and other activities.

Report to the Group Leader, Section Manager or Department Manager; work under the direction of the HVAC/R Mechanic I as required.

Accountability / Scope

Failure to maintain or operate systems could jeopardize product integrity and place Abbott in non‑compliance with government agencies.

Errors in shutting down equipment or opening switches may result in product loss and financial impact.

Accidental energizing of systems could pose life or death implications.

Failure to adhere to operating instructions and safety policies may result in injury, fatalities or property loss.

Required Qualifications

High‑school education or equivalent.

3 + years of formal training and work experience in commercial/industrial HVAC/R system maintenance.

Proficiency in all aspects of HVAC/R maintenance and ability to work well with others.

Preferred: EPA certification for refrigerant reclaiming equipment and proper usage and disposal of refrigerants.

Preferred Qualifications

Associate’s degree preferred.

Ability to work with minimal supervision.

Excellent customer‑service skills.

The base pay for this position is $22.05 – $44.15 per hour. Pay may vary by location.
