Senior Underwriter — Financial Institutions Professional Lines (FI)
Underwrites Financial Institutions Professional Lines business within delegated authority, exercising independent judgment and making analytical, data‑driven decisions on appetite, structure and pricing. Works mainly with banks, credit unions, broker‑dealers, investment advisers, and other financial institutions across North America. In this senior role you will handle more complex or unusual accounts and higher individual line sizes, applying deep product and industry knowledge with limited guidance from leadership.
Key responsibilities
Underwrite and bind FI Professional Lines accounts (e.g., D&O, Fiduciary, EPLI and other segment related lines pricing and structuring terms and limits.
Analyze financials, controls, regulatory/enforcement history, loss runs and third‑party/vendor exposure to assess risk.
Manage a portfolio of brokers/agents and insureds; develop profitable business and retain renewals.
Maintain market relationships, negotiate placements, and elevate facultative/reinsurance needs as required.
Collaborate with Claims, Actuarial, Legal and underwriting leadership; contribute to product wording and process improvements.
Monitor regulatory changes and emerging FI exposures (fintech, vendor/cloud risk, cyber‑enabled fraud).
Mentor junior underwriters and support cross‑functional projects (no direct line management).
Qualifications
Degree in Business or equivalent typically required
A minimum of 2.5 years, typically 3 or more years, of progressive Financial Institutions or Professional Lines underwriting experience and/or other related experience
RPLU or professional insurance designation preferred
Proven analytical ability to evaluate and judge underwriting risks within scope of responsibility that includes competence with all phases and aspects of the underwriting process, and proficiency in the use of qualitative and quantitative tools and techniques
Must demonstrate comprehension of complex technical underwriting issues and be capable of defining and implementing necessary underwriting and administrative processes/workflows to properly manage or administer those issues
Proven track record of developing and underwriting profitable business
