Description The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) invites applications for a postdoctoral research position to work on the characterization M dwarfs in the UV with application to better understanding the influence of high energy M dwarf irradiation on small exoplanet atmospheres, including photochemistry and escape of high mean molecular weight species. The successful applicant will work with Dr. Hannah Diamond‑Lowe and join the vibrant community of exoplanet researchers at STScI.
The successful candidate will join a broader team of US and international collaborators working to assess the influence of M dwarfs on the atmospheres of small planets. Main research topics relevant to this postdoctoral position include:
Measuring the UV output of nearby M dwarf hosts, determining UV flare rates and activity cycles of these stars, developing and applying tools for assessing activity properties, or similar observational and data analytic projects focused on M dwarfs.
Developing photochemical or atmospheric escape models with an eventual goal of joining empirical measurements of M dwarf high energy output with the evolution or destruction of small planet atmospheres, or similar modeling or theoretical pursuits for M dwarf planets.
It is expected that this work will in some way utilize data or research themes from the Hot Rock Stars program (HST GO 17503; PI Diamond‑Lowe), and its companion program to observe secondary eclipses of nearby rocky exoplanets with JWST/MIRI (the Hot Rocks Survey, JWST GO 3730; PI Diamond‑Lowe).
Applicants with an interest in studying M dwarfs and their small planets from an observational, data analysis, modeling, or theory perspective are encouraged to apply. Also important is a willingness to take on new projects, learn new skills, and work independently to bring projects to fruition. The successful applicant will be expected to be involved with and lead research in exoplanetary science.
STScI offers a dynamic, supportive, and inclusive research environment with journal clubs, science talks, and a postdoc mentoring program. STScI is located next to Johns Hopkins University, and there are ample opportunities to interact with the JHU scientific community, as well as researchers in the broader Maryland area (e.g., University of Maryland, NASA Goddard). The successful candidate will join both Dr. Diamond‑Lowe’s research group and the broader transiting exoplanet research group working on a wide array of topics in exoplanetary science, including new results from JWST and HST.
STScI offers an excellent benefits package, competitive salary, and a stimulating work environment. STScI's pay is commensurate with the year of Ph.D. The nominal start date of this position is September 2026, but earlier or later start dates are possible. The appointment will be for two years, with a possibility for one-year extension based on performance and funding availability.
