Position Overview: The Professional Billing Specialist performs all functions of the billing department, including billing, follow-up, cash posting, and denials management for a multispecialty billing department. Responsibilities include managing all aspects of the job, completing monthly billing reports for the department and individual physicians as assigned, and writing denial arguments utilizing research skills and billing knowledge. The role also involves handling audit-related issues and making decisions regarding billing accuracy, re-billing, follow-up, and prevention actions. All duties must comply with Singing River Health System procedures, policies, accreditation standards, and healthcare regulations.
Additional Information:
High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or higher preferred.
American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) certification preferred; must maintain certification with continuing education.
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in physician billing, with the ability to work independently and make management-level decisions. Coding experience and knowledge of AHA Coding Clinic are preferred.
Effective interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills; proficient computer skills.
Reports to: Director of Revenue Integrity
Supervises: None
Physical demands include sitting, moving about the office and facility, travel within SRHS service area, and exposure to body fluids and tissues. Must be able to perceive sound, have visual acuity, and work actively for extended periods.
Mental demands include decision-making, communication, working under pressure, and attention to detail.
Requires travel throughout the SRHS service area with personal transportation.
Knowledge of inpatient and outpatient coding is required.
Special Demands: Must possess excellent customer service skills, professional etiquette, proficiency in computer use, and the ability to apply clinical judgment appropriately across all ages.
