Railcar Repairman (Carman) – Wall, PA

TTX Company We are seeking a skilled Railcar Repairman (Carman) to maintain and repair railcars in our Wall, PA facility. This is an entry-level full‑time position that requires hands‑on mechanical work, welding, and strict adherence to safety and quality standards. Responsibilities
Repair, modify, and upgrade rail cars according to blueprints and specifications. Rebuild car components such as bolsters, side framers, hitch heads, and boxcar doors. Perform welding (30% of time), cutting, and fabrication using appropriate tools and a cutting torch. Operate forklifts and other equipment to move and align parts. Measure, cut, thread, and replace air lines and pipes using hand tools. Assemble subassemblies and major components; test for proper operation. Enter repair information into an electronic system. Maintain a clean work environment and safely operate metalworking tools. Performance Standards
Complete tasks within specified time standards. Meet customer, industry, and company quality standards (AAR, FMO, FRA, TTX). Follow all safety rules and work practices to protect self and others. Equipment / Tools Used
Circular saw, air impact wrenches (½", ¾", 1"), air or hydraulic portable power pump and ram. Hand tools, cutting torch, heating torch, side grinder, hoist, winch. Safety Equipment
Steel‑toe shoes, hard hat, earplugs, safety glasses, welding shield, burning goggles, grinding shield, long‑sleeved shirts and pants. Physical Requirements
Stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and lift regularly (up to 80 lbs. per lift). Frequent repetitive motions such as gripping, reaching, and turning. Work outdoors in varying temperatures; exposure to welding fumes, dust, and noise. Qualifications
Mechanical skills and knowledge of railcar systems. Welding and cutting proficiency. Decision‑making and reasoning abilities. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications. Good short‑term memory, planning, and information gathering skills. Working Conditions
Shifts of 8–10 hours; schedule may vary. Outdoor work; exposure to heat, cold, vibrations, and moving machinery. May work alone or in a small team. Reporting Relationship
Reports to the line or work‑group supervisor. Pay and Benefits
Base pay $28/hour, scaled by Carman/Journeyman status. Participates in Railroad Retirement; full health, dental, vision, PTO, and 401(k) with company match.
