The City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) supports artists and cultural organizations, invests in the creative economy, and expands access and participation in the arts throughout Chicago's 77 neighborhoods. As a collaborative cultural presenter, arts funder, and advocate for creative workers, our programs and events serve Chicagoans and visitors of all ages and backgrounds, downtown and in diverse communities across our city to strengthen and celebrate Chicago. DCASE produces some of the city's most iconic festivals, markets, events, and exhibitions at the Chicago Cultural Center, Millennium Park, and various communities, serving a local and global audience of 25 million people. The department offers cultural grants and resources, manages public art, supports TV and film production, and permits special events across Chicago. Annually, DCASE offers more than 2,000 high-quality free exhibitions, concerts, theatrical and dance performances, films, lectures, family events, and other programs at venues across the city. Notable events include the Chicago House Music Festival, Gospel Music Festival, Blues Festival, Taste of Chicago, SummerDance Celebration, and Jazz Festival. DCASE also manages a wide range of projects that promote the City of Chicago and its vibrant neighborhoods. Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers are essential for providing information, leading tours, and engaging with the public at various free cultural venues and events. Opportunities include: Chicago Cultural Center:
Tours (public and private), information desks, audience surveys, and event support such as greeting and wayfinding for concerts, exhibitions, family events, Learning Lab, and Welcome Center. Outdoor Public Art Tours Millennium Park:
Greeting, wayfinding, and assisting with audience surveys. Taste of Chicago:
Greeting, wayfinding, and assisting with audience surveys. Essential Duties
Serve as the first point of contact for guests at the Chicago Cultural Center and events, answering questions about the venues and the city. Lead tours of the Chicago Cultural Center. Engage with the public in the Learning Lab and Welcome Center. Support other DCASE events with duties such as greeting, wayfinding, check-in, setup, survey assistance, and more. Minimum Qualifications
Must be 18 years or older Excellent communication and customer service skills Knowledge of Chicago, the Loop, arts, and events Ability to volunteer 6-12 hours per month Reliable and punctual Basic computer skills and access to email Additional Information
This is an at-will position. Duties may include indoor and outdoor activities. Candidates must pass a criminal background check and attend mandatory training before volunteering. Additional training may be required for some assignments. Previous volunteer experience and knowledge of Chicago history, art history, or foreign languages are valued but not required. Hours include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Successful candidates will be notified by phone or email. Residency and Compensation
Residency is not required. This is an unpaid position. Application Process
