Position Summary
Operate or tend painting machines to paint exterior surfaces of railcar equipment.
Trained in mixing own paint.
Operate painting machines according to manufacturer's product data sheet.
Perform quality checks of paint job using a wet mil gauge to inspect proper thickness of coating.
Spray prepared surfaces with specified amounts of primers or finish coatings.
Select correct spray gun system for the material being applied.
Pour paint into spray guns and adjust nozzles and paint mixes to achieve proper paint flow and coating thickness.
Disassemble, clean, and reassemble sprayers and power equipment using solvents, wire brushes, and cloths.
Apply primer over repairs to railcar surfaces.
Monitor painting operations to identify flaws such as blisters and streaks and correct causes.
Dispose of hazardous waste appropriately.
Allow product to dry then touch up missed spots.
Select paint according to company requirements and match colors following specified color charts.
Operate lifting and moving devices to move equipment or materials to paint rails.
Verify paint consistency using a viscosity meter.
Set up portable equipment such as ventilators, exhaust units, ladders, and scaffolding.
Skills
Ability to paint efficiently and consistently in all positions.
Able to stand for long periods of time with limited breaks.
Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds and team lift up to 150 pounds.
Work in extreme temperatures and elements for extended periods.
Must be able to work in confined spaces.
Must be able to work at elevated heights.
Must be able to read and comprehend basic drawings and scope of work.
Must possess basic math skills: addition, subtraction.
