Role Summary Join our quickly growing, fast-paced Underwriting team! We are hiring several full-time experienced Underwriters. The primary purpose of all levels of Underwriting is to provide accurate and timely risk assessment and evaluation of life applications utilizing National Life underwriting policies, guidelines and insurance laws and regulations.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Review Cases and Underwrite: Conducts risk assessments, following NLG Underwriting guidelines and philosophies, by analyzing data, using tools (e.g. medical history, prescription databases, borrowing history, credit rating, etc.), and third-party information. Reviews files to assess risk and regulatory compliance (e.g. IGO, NIGO, etc.) on potential clients by analyzing health-related data, assessing financial status of clients, and makes final risk decisions on policies to protect NLG bottom line and maintain profitability by avoiding fines and putting good risk on the books.
Grow and Maintain Underwriting Knowledge Base: Proactively seeks information (e.g. processes, philosophies, etc.) as well as formal and informal educational opportunities (e.g. medical and mentoring discussions, etc.) to build the foundations of a solid Underwriting career and continuously expand knowledge, skills, and abilities. Participation in industry education, taking exams (e.g. ALU, LOMA, etc.) and earning designations to help build business acumen.
Collaborate: Communicates (verbal and written) with internal and external constituents to gather information around new cases, gain insights, and explain decisioning while building relationships with customers / agents and demonstrating seamless service excellence. Effectively communicates in a way that helps customers understand NLG policies and processes for decision making that instills confidence in our practices. Builds relationships with others in the organization (e.g. Agency leaders, agents, distribution leaders, client partners, key accounts, etc.).
Provide Technical Expertise: Guides and educates team members on improving quality, capabilities, efficiencies, and output. Identifies and facilitates implementation of cross‑functional process improvement opportunities. Participates in interdepartmental presentations, helps with new hire training in various subjects.
Resolve Escalations: Identifies, communicates, and resolves escalations while keeping key stakeholders informed; seeks assistance from manager/mentor for resolution. Reviews escalation requests with urgency and may consult on these with a mentor or leader.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree preferred, and minimum 2 years Life Underwriting experience in production‑oriented environment required.
Must be able to pass a background check.

Base Pay Range The base pay range for this position is the range National Life reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for the position taking into account the wide variety of factors, including: prior experience and job‑related knowledge; education, training and certificates; current business needs; and market factors. The final salary or hourly wages offered may be outside of this range based on other reasons and individual circumstances.
Additional Compensation and Benefits The total compensation package for this position may also include a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. The successful candidate may also be eligible to participate in National Life’s discretionary annual incentive programs, subject to the rules governing such programs. If hired, the employee will be in an "at‑will" position and National Life reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
