Position Summary
This position bridges research, engineering, and insurance, translating scientific findings into educational materials and guidance for member companies, loss control professionals, and policyholders. The goal is to support resilient construction practices that go beyond code requirements and strengthen the built environment against severe weather. You will help member companies better understand how building performance influences risk, enabling more informed underwriting, enhancing loss control evaluations, and advancing risk mitigation across commercial portfolios.
Key Responsibilities
Collaborate with commercial lines, product, research, engineering, and FORTIFIED teams to develop peril‑specific resources that translate IBHS findings into actionable guidance for members and policyholders.
Provide education and technical guidance to insurance professionals on common structural vulnerabilities in commercial buildings and how to evaluate them during underwriting.
Partner with research teams to share insights on key commercial insurance loss drivers, helping align IBHS research priorities with industry needs.
Design and facilitate educational sessions, both virtual and in‑person, on IBHS research advancements and the FORTIFIED Designation program, emphasizing their relevance to commercial underwriting.
Regularly meet with commercial members to identify new loss drivers and emerging risks that can help drive IBHS’s new product development.
Qualifications Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management and Insurance, Finance, Business Administration, Economics, Engineering, or a related field. Candidates with a degree in another field will be considered if they have relevant experience in commercial property underwriting or risk management.
6+ years of experience in commercial property underwriting or loss control.
Associate Risk Management (ARM) or Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) is a plus.
Technical Skills
Strong knowledge of commercial property underwriting, including risk assessment, coverage evaluation, and exposure analysis. Loss control experience is a plus.
Proficiency in analyzing different types of commercial property coverages and how policy terms, forms, and endorsements influence underwriting decisions and risk management strategies.
Familiarity with a range of underwriting workflows and operational processes, with the ability to integrate risk data, engineering insights, and policy systems throughout the underwriting cycle.
Ability to translate complex research theories and engineering outcomes into insurance terminology and actionable guidance that supports underwriting and risk management decisions.
Soft Skills
Communicate effectively and collaborate with diverse teams.
Use analytical thinking to solve complex problems.
Confident presentation to audiences of varying sizes and backgrounds.
