University of Maryland, Baltimore – HVAC Mechanic II
Under general supervision, the selected incumbent will install, service and repair all components or sub‑components of commercial and industrial heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. The position handles heat pumps, centralized air conditioning systems up to 250 tons and multiple zone applications.

Primary Duties
Installs, operates, services and repairs chiller plants up to 250 tons.
Operates, services and repairs air handling and hydronic pumping systems.
Performs test and balance procedures to air and hydronic systems to determine required adjustments.
Tests water in cooling towers; adds chemicals for control of alkalinity, algae and scale formation in condensers.
Tests water in closed loop systems; adds chemicals to control corrosion and bio‑growth.
Diagnoses, maintains and performs service repairs to gas burners; replaces heat exchangers and component controls.
Tests and sets up burner operation to provide proper fuel to air ratios.
Maintains variable frequency drive applications on pumps and fans.
Services and repairs humidification systems utilizing steam and/or self‑generated applications.
Services and repairs plumbing and electrical components of HVAC building systems.
Provides guidance and training in the HVAC trade to other maintenance personnel.
Performs all the duties of the Temperature Control Mechanic and HVAC Mechanic I.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED.
Six (6) years progressively responsible experience in any combination of air conditioning, refrigeration, temperature control, steam distribution or heating trades.
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis with 30 college credits equivalent to one year of experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of air conditioning and refrigeration principles; of installation, repair and maintenance of HVAC equipment and systems; of refrigerant types, environmental impact and gas reclamation procedures and equipment.
General knowledge of OSHA regulations related to the refrigeration trade; of National Electric Code; of basic mathematics including area, volume, weights and practical application on fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions.
Working knowledge of plumbing, steamfitting and the electrical trades as they pertain to HVAC systems.
Skill in the installation, repair and maintenance of commercial or industrial HVAC equipment; in use and maintenance of tools and equipment of the trade.
Ability to read and understand manufacturer recommendations regarding scheduled and preventive maintenance; use computers and software to diagnose HVAC system problems; prepare written reports; communicate effectively orally and in writing; work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; work at heights up to 35 feet; manipulate heavy equipment, tools and supplies up to 50 pounds; work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces and adverse weather or temperature conditions; wear personal protective equipment.

Employees assigned to work with CFC refrigerants must maintain valid certification in accordance with federal law.
Valid Maryland Non‑commercial Class C or equivalent driver's license may be required.
Candidates may be required to be trained to work with asbestos.
Selected candidates are eligible to participate in the Bargaining Unit (Union).
Salary Range $65,853.65 – $73,170.73 per year (commensurate with education and experience). New hires will receive a 2.5% adjustment to base salary upon successful completion of 6‑month probationary period.
