The machine builder works to engineering drawings and specifications to assemble complex machinery, such as automated assembly equipment, materials handling equipment, machining equipment, finishing equipment, etc.
The machine builder uses machine tools such as milling machines, surface grinders, ID/OD grinders, and lathes to make and fit component parts as assembly progresses. The machine builder uses a variety of hand tools and inspection and test equipment to fit and assemble components.
The machine builder must have good mechanical aptitude, good visualization ability, and good math and blueprint reading skills. The machine builder will communicate with engineers and designers to resolve problems which arise during assembly and to revise engineering drawings and specifications as necessary.
Machinist
Working to engineering drawings and specifications, the Machinist operates machine tools to perform the necessary machining operations to process raw material into completed components, such as shafts, brackets, gears, housings, punches, frames, etc. The machining operations may include milling, shaping, planing, lathe turning, drilling, grinding, electrical discharge machining, and sawing, and may be manually or computer numerically controlled (CNC).
