
Tax Manager, Private Client Services

Private Client Services at BDO is a boutique practice within our firm that serves high net‑worth individuals, families, family offices, C‑Suite executives, athletes, entertainers, and others with complex tax and financial structures. The practice covers estate, income, gift, and trust tax consulting and compliance; charitable giving; executive compensation; and cash‑flow, retirement, and life insurance planning.
Job Summary A Tax Manager, Private Client Services provides tax compliance and consulting services to high net‑worth clients, utilizing educational background and professional experience along with communication, time management, leadership, technical, business development, and people skills.
Job Duties
Manage tax and consulting engagements and identify client needs, tax planning, and consulting opportunities.
Work directly with clients and their advisors to gather information needed to prepare tax returns.
Review individual, trust, estate, S‑Corp, foundation, partnership, and gift tax returns and provide written and verbal feedback to staff and interns.
Direct communication with government agencies for matters of the highest complexity.
Identify technical issues, conduct advanced tax research, and develop sound recommendations for PCS leadership.
Develop and expand understanding of tax concepts and knowledge through client engagements and current tax developments.
Prioritize and complete tasks both individually and with a team.
Assist with PCS/firm contribution responsibilities including billing, recruiting, attendance, and participation in CPE activities and training.
Build new relationships and maintain existing relationships with BDO professionals and external sources.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise associates and senior associates on all projects.
Review work prepared by associates and senior associates and provide review comments.
Train associates and seniors on current software tools.
Act as a career advisor to associates and senior associates.
Schedule and manage workload of associates and senior associates.
Provide verbal and written performance feedback.
Education & Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required (major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred).
Master’s degree in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
Experience
Five (5) or more years prior experience in accounting, finance, or law required.
Experience in public accounting or the private client service area preferred.
License / Certifications
Certified Public Accountant, IRS Enrolled Agent, Attorney (U.S. jurisdiction), or equivalent required.
Other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role preferred.
Software Proficiency
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat required.
Experience with tax compliance process software (GoSystems, BNA Tax Planner, GoFileRoom, SurePrep) preferred.
Experience with tax research tools (BNA Portfolio, CCH IntelliConnect, Checkpoint, Lexis Nexis) preferred.
Salary Ranges by State
California: $112,000 – $150,000
Colorado: $111,500 – $130,000
Illinois: $105,000 – $130,000
Maryland: $113,000 – $120,000
Massachusetts: $120,000 – $127,000
Minnesota: $90,000 – $120,000
New Jersey: $115,000 – $140,000
NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $125,000 – $160,000
Washington: $110,000 – $125,000
Washington DC: $120,000 – $140,000
