Job Summary Under minimal or no supervision of the Manager of Construction Services (MCS), or Construction Manager (CM), the Assistant Construction Manager works independently or in conjunction with the MCS/CM to simultaneously manage the construction of numerous public‑works governed construction projects using outside contractors and Facilities Management construction staff. These projects include major capital, minor capital, deferred maintenance, capital renewal, department, and other improvement projects, utilizing various funding sources including state, enterprise funds, auxiliaries, grants, department funds, and donations.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee all project‑related documents and ensure project logs are updated to reflect status changes.

Manage day‑to‑day construction administration of projects of all sizes, contracting methods, and funding sources.

Coordinate with inspectors for all required inspections and testing.

Review change‑order requests, submittals, RFIs, etc., with the Project Engineer to determine validity, cost fairness, and impact.

Department Design and Construction Services

Department Description Beach Building Services (BBS) at CSULB supports the university by ensuring safe operation, maintenance, and development of the campus. BBS provides facilities‑based comprehensive support in academics, activities, events, and more, contributing to a well‑rounded campus experience for students, faculty, and staff.

Time Base 1.0 time‑base, 40 hours per week.

Duration of Appointment This is a regular/probationary position.

Classification Administrator II

Compensation Salary placement is determined by education, experience, qualifications, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

Hiring Range $9,164–$10,882 per month (commensurate with qualifications). CSU salary range: $9,164–$13,746 per month.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Thorough knowledge of construction practices, scheduling methods (CPM, etc.), engineering methods, and relevant codes (Title 24, ADA, California Building & Safety Codes). Ability to work independently, identify complex issues, develop solutions, and minimize risk to the university. Proficiency in construction software, drawing interpretation, and organizational tools. Strong communication, negotiation, and consensus‑building skills. Understanding of public‑works laws, ordinances, safety, and university policies.

Education and Experience

Required bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or related field.

Required minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible construction contract management experience.

Preferred experience in a university or large institutional setting, public‑sector, low‑bid, design‑build, or job‑order contracting.

Preferred LEED AP BD+C.

Licenses and Certifications

Required valid California driver’s license.

Preferred DBIA certification.

Preferred CCM certification.

Preferred CASp certification.
