About ACS Industries ACS Industries is the world’s largest vertically integrated metal mesh manufacturer and the global leader in pyrotechnic airbag inflator filters.
We serve a wide range of industries including vehicle safety, clean air systems, and green energy.
Our cutting‑edge components support hydrogen production through partnerships with leading global green hydrogen producers.
Our core technologies include expanded metal, metal wire weaving, and metal wire knitting with manufacturing machines produced in‑house.
We are currently focused on the development of fixturing for use in high‑temperature, high vacuum environments as well as ultraprecision machine design (to µin precision).
We design and manufacture anodes, cell components, stack hardware, and assemblies for PEM, Alkaline, and Solid Oxide Electrolyzers, applying our scale and engineering expertise to reduce the cost of hydrogen production.
Our fast‑paced R&D team is at the heart of innovation in this growing industry.
Position Overview We are looking for a self‑motivated, organized R&D Mechanical Engineer with 3–7 years of experience and a background in project management. This role is ideal for candidates who thrive in fast‑moving environments with shifting priorities and a need for adaptability. You will contribute to designing mechanical systems, developing new manufacturing solutions, and driving engineering projects from concept through implementation.
You will join a multidisciplinary team of experts in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, and materials science. This role requires knowledge of machine design, precision testing and inspection equipment design, high‑temperature material behavior, microcontaminant control, and automated systems.
Key Responsibilities:
Design, develop, and test mechanical systems and components to improve performance, reliability, and cost‑efficiency.
Support the development and sourcing of automated equipment and assembly fixtures.
Conceptualize and engineer new equipment and processes as ACS expands into green energy and other emerging markets.
Independently manage and track project timelines, budgets, and deliverables.
Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to address defects or quality issues.
Identify and validate appropriate materials and manufacturing processes.
Plan and execute testing, validation, and documentation of new designs.
Collaborate with internal teams (production, procurement, quality, etc.) and external suppliers.
Support quoting activities by estimating lead times, costs and resources for new prospective R&D projects.
Travel domestically and internationally as required to support projects or suppliers.
Qualifications Required Qualifications:
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
3–7 years of mechanical design and development experience in a manufacturing or R&D environment.
Project management experience (formal or informal), with the ability to coordinate resources and timelines.
Solid modeling and drawing skills using SolidWorks.
Proficient with Microsoft Office and engineering documentation tools.
Self‑driven, organized, and capable of multitasking in a fast‑paced environment.
Strong communication, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
Preferred/Beneficial Experience:
Machining knowledge (mill, lathe, CNC, etc.)
FEA and thermal modeling experience
Test fixture design and material testing
Familiarity with machine controls (PLCs, servo/stepper motors)
Spanish language proficiency
Experience operating or programming fiber laser cutting machines (Amada preferred)
Experience working with materials at high temperatures and under vacuum
Job Details:
Location: On-site at ACS Industries, One New England Way, Lincoln, RI.
Schedule: Full-time, not a remote position.
Travel: Occasional domestic and international travel required.
