Job Summary
Responsible for organizing and planning the field execution of internal reliability and construction projects. Provides oversight on projects and key tasks for day-to-day planning and execution of construction projects performed by resources. Ensures projects are constructed in accordance with company standards, specifications, schedules, and requirements. Interfaces with non-company personnel to ensure optimal allocation of support resources to meet project schedule objectives cost efficiently. Works directly with project managers and project engineers on constructability reviews, technical aspects of designs, schedule objectives, project planning, safety plan development, quality plan development, and cost-effective installations. Span of control: 3-5 projects and multiple vendors per project.
Key Accountabilities
Reviews design/construction drawings for constructability; coordinates with personnel to refine construction plans and schedules.
Coordinates construction activities on multiple projects to avoid interferences when working in common areas and adjacent to other internal groups; facilitates coordination meetings, schedules, etc., between multiple contractors.
Leads project safety efforts; provides direct input in the development of project-specific safety plans, performs field safety observations, and immediately addresses any violations or concerns.
Coordinates with engineering, subject-matter experts, and project stakeholders to develop a quality plan (identify critical characteristics, hold points, acceptance testing, etc.).
Works with project manager to resolve escalated construction project concerns and works with appropriate parties (contractors, customers, agencies, etc.) to determine project and scheduling solutions.
Ensures as-built drawings are created for work installed and reviews as-builts before payment to contractor is approved.
Balances resources and workloads to ensure projects are appropriately planned, prioritized, and executed; monitors productivity and work progress; implements workload adjustments if standards are not met.
Coordinates equipment tie-ins with client/business unit partner to existing facilities within approved schedules.
Performs post-construction walk-downs of all systems prior to company acceptance from contractors.
Leads the timely completion of punch list items.
Applies and works with new construction materials, practices, and technologies as deemed appropriate for the given project.
Assumes responsibility as key tag protection leader and/or job leader per applicable corporate policy.
Guides continuous improvement commitment & efforts.
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements
High school diploma or GED with 6 years of job-relevant experience, OR
Associate’s degree with 4 years of job-relevant experience, OR
Bachelor’s degree with 2 years of job-relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications
Certificate in a job-relevant skilled trade or completion of a skilled trade apprenticeship.
Bachelor's degree in construction management.
Experience supporting or managing construction activities within high-voltage substations, including civil, structural, and electrical scopes.
Understanding utility safety practices and work procedures for energized and de-energized substation environments.
Proven ability to manage field resources and coordinate multi-discipline teams on energized and non-energized substation sites.
Demonstrated experience working with high voltage substation equipment such as breakers, transformers, disconnect switches, switch gear, relay panels, etc.
Other Qualifications
Proficiency in applicable software applications (e.g., Microsoft Office, Maximo) with minimal instruction or guidance.
Experience managing multiple projects and dealing with customers.
Effective verbal and written communication with individuals at all levels.
Analytical and problem-solving skills to identify key issues and recommend optimal solutions.
Thorough knowledge of project management concepts and processes, including project controls related to design, procurement, and construction management.
Ability to apply project planning and continuous improvement principles to effect tangible, positive outcomes.
Effectively deals with resistance and promotes constructive critique.
Will be required to work overtime and, on occasion, varying shifts.
Ability to work in a team or matrix structure, supporting multiple clients.
Ability to conduct effective and efficient meetings with craft and facility stakeholders.
Flexibility and ability to work with shifting priorities; embraces new and evolving responsibilities.
Additional Information Testing Required: Not Applicable On-Site Role: Must be available to work on-site at this assigned work location and additional sites as determined. Emergency Response: Yes – Must be available to perform a primary assignment in support of DTE’s emergency response to storms or other events that impact service to our customers.
