Requirements
Experience with pediatrics, geriatrics, and hard sticks
Minimum 1 year of experience
Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment
Minimum 6 months’ work experience performing venipunctures in a fast‑paced lab or hospital setting
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
High School Diploma or GED (prefer hospital experience)
Summary The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training and making workflow recommendations.
Position Responsibilities
Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, decontamination, updating patient information.
Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
Clearly and courteously explain the process of venipuncture (blood drawing) and/or other specimen collection (ex. urine or fecal) as required.
Demonstrate technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
Fully understand all physicians’ orders.
Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes: label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
Check all test requisitions or computer labels against the script to ensure 100% accuracy.
Package specimens for transport.
Store specimen samples according to required temperature, using appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately labeling, and following procedures outlined by protocol to maintain specimen integrity.
Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
Attend annual department trainings.
Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
