Position Summary The Substation Foreman supervises, assigns, and coordinates substation construction and maintenance activities to ensure a productive workforce that supports all divisional, departmental, site, and corporate goals while complying with company policies and local, state, and federal regulations. The foreman directs work and provides technical assistance to subordinates and craft employees working under lump sum and fixed unit price contracts. This position requires 8-9 years of continuous experience with at least 5 years as a Top Substation Technician A craft position.
Essential Functions Oversees job to ensure crew is working safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair, testing, adjusting and troubleshooting work of substation equipment/systems. Responsibilities include:
Concrete foundations, ground grids, and steel erection
Buswork (High and Low Voltage)
Airbreak / Hookstick switches
Control cable work and terminations (High/Low Voltage)
Control building and conduit installations
Capacitor bank installations 23kv-230kv
Transformers, regulators and circuit breakers
Circuit switchers, motor-operated and manual switches
Maintain company vehicles, test equipment and tools in good working condition
Work with energized high voltage systems requiring skill and care to protect safety
Minimum Requirements
Perform rigorous physical labor
Climb and work at heights up to 125 feet
Commercial driver’s license
Own personal hand tools
Own safety toed work boots
Lifting in excess of 50 lbs.
Work in confined spaces
Work independently or with others
Operational experience with heavy equipment: bucket, derrick, boom trucks; backhoes, excavators, skid steer loaders; articulating man-lifts; pressure diggers; trenchers; track crawler loader/backhoe; rough terrain telescopic forklifts
Willing to work overtime, long hours during emergencies, or at short notice
90% travel required
Follow company safety rules and policies
Extensive knowledge of construction standard practices, techniques, quality requirements, codes and standards
Work in close proximity to energized substation equipment
Interpret substation drawings and communicate with customers and subordinates
Appraise technical situations and recommend solutions
Lead and coach subordinates
Develop and interpret material lists
Trace phasing in a substation and verify to three line diagrams
Proficient in all aspects of substation systems
Determine proper phase shift and rotation in paralleling transformer banks
Direct daily work of the crew
Read and work from drawings, specifications, procedures, standards, and adhere to project schedule
Take responsibility for all crew members
Motivate crew and develop pride in crew members
Establish grade, elevations, and layout of foundations and cable troughs in new and existing stations
Work extended periods in various locations when requested
Physical Demands Regularly required to talk or hear, stand, walk, use hands to fingers, handle to feel, and reach. Work may involve exposure to fumes, airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, vibration, extreme conditions, and loud noise.
Work Environment Outdoor weather conditions with exposure to fumes, airborne particles, moving parts and vibration, extreme temperatures, and loud noise.
