Join FirstEnergy as a NERC Compliance Specialist. This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., headquartered in Akron, Ohio. FirstEnergy is dedicated to integrity, safety, reliability and operational excellence.
Job Description The position reports to the Supervisor, Compliance Field Support & Physical Security, and is responsible for overseeing the Reliability Compliance organization’s compliance with NERC’s standards. The role includes coordinating audits, preparing self‑certifications, responding to data submittals, and monitoring new and revised reliability standards.
Responsibilities
Maintain and update FirstEnergy’s compliance program infrastructure, including policies, procedures, and technology tools.
Verify compliance with NERC, Reliability First (RF), and PJM policies, and identify opportunities for improvement.
Investigate, document, and submit potential violations to regulatory organizations and ensure timely resolution.
Coordinate with business units to resolve compliance issues and develop improvement recommendations.
Utilize compliance technology to assign, track, and monitor efforts; coordinate self‑certification and data submittal activities.
Prepare and deliver presentations for diverse audiences.
Review and ensure the technical accuracy of regulatory reports concerning bulk electric system events.
Communicate NERC Standards Development activities to relevant stakeholders.
Ensure timely adherence to new/revised NERC and RF obligations and PJM TOP tasks.
Maintain awareness of emerging utility industry issues through benchmarking and participation in forums.
Promote a sense of urgency in the team for meeting goals and deadlines.
Additional Responsibilities for Senior Level
Prepare for, coordinate, and support compliance audits conducted by internal resources, consultants, or regulatory organizations.
Conduct or review apparent or root‑cause analysis related to compliance issues.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical or Mechanical preferred) or a non‑technical discipline with the required work experience; 6–7 years at basic level, 8–10 years at senior level.
Knowledge of NERC and RF standards and policies is preferred.
Strong written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate effectively within FirstEnergy.
Exceptional teamwork and interpersonal skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office tools.
For senior level: experience developing and implementing new or significantly revised programs; strong analytical abilities; leadership and organizational skills; technical expertise in Microsoft Office.
