Apply to join our Economic Services Administration Community Service Division. This entry‑level role will be based in our Pierce South Community Services Office (CSO) in Tacoma, WA. The position offers full‑time hours, training, and a pathway to a rewarding public service career.

Description As a Public Benefits Specialist, you will help individuals apply for public assistance, conduct eligibility interviews, gather required documentation, and process applications using state and federal software.

Salary

Public Benefits Specialist 1:

$4,428.00 Step G – $5,011.00 Step L (6 months)

Public Benefits Specialist 2:

$4,428.00 Step D – $5,398.00 Step L (6 months)

Public Benefits Specialist 3:

$4,882.00 Step E – $5,812.00 Step L

What You Will Do

Use internal software to process applications for eligibility of financial assistance, child care, SNAP, and Medicaid.

Conduct intensive interviews and independently determine eligibility.

Gather and review data, applications, and verifications for each program.

Process all applications and case actions in accordance with federal and state requirements.

Explain program requirements, procedures, and verify needs to clients.

Qualifications

Four years in a customer service role with public contact or staff support in financial eligibility determination; college education may substitute experience.

OR one year of equivalent experience conducting financial eligibility determination for public assistance programs.

Able to learn and utilize various computer programs.

Effective communication with diverse or difficult clients, including calming, working with communication challenges, and discussing confidential options.

Analytical skills for complex technical regulations.

Refrains from personal bias when determining eligibility.

Prioritizes multiple tasks in a busy office.
