Responsibilities
Grow and maintain diversified books of business while working with agents to assess risks, determine premiums, set conditions and negotiate in order to ensure profitability and meet business goals.
Maintain and nurture successful relationships with agents, while presenting proposals, negotiating deals and obtaining approvals.
Document account reviews, state‑compliant sign‑offs and referrals, letters of authority and follow underwriting guidelines.
Provide mentorship to underwriters in both technical and professional skills and share best practices for continuous improvement.
Preferred Candidates
Strategic Account Manager – writing new accounts, growing successful agent and broker relationships and pursuing renewals.
Problem Solver – crunch numbers to determine risk selection, premiums, policies and conditions, and identify opportunities for improved growth.
Clear Communicator – maintain relationships, present proposals, negotiate deals and obtain approvals.
Collaborative Teammate – contribute to overall team success, mentor peers and share best practices.
Conscientious Professional – complete paperwork, document reviews, state‑compliant sign‑offs, letters of authority and follow underwriting guidelines.
Qualifications
2‑5 years of commercial underwriting experience.
Experience with Commercial Inland Marine insurance products or Commercial multi‑line underwriting with knowledge of Inland Marine.
Analytical, problem‑solving capabilities.
Strong territory management skills.
Excellent communication skills.
Aptitude for building rewarding relationships with agents and brokers, peer underwriters, underwriting assistants and junior underwriters.
Command of insurance finance and actuarial concepts.
Thorough knowledge of commercial insurance products, underwriting, risk selection, pricing and marketplaces, as well as regulatory issues.
Understanding of contract language, including regulatory and policy differences among applicable states.
Familiarity with continuous improvement processes and tools.
Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
Professional insurance designations (currently or in process).
