Job Summary The General Casualty Underwriter will review and analyze underwriting data to determine if risks meet corporate underwriting standards, calculate appropriate premium, and determine proper terms for acceptable risks. The role includes responding to brokers when risks do not meet underwriting guidelines and developing and maintaining profitable business relationships with brokers.
Duties and Responsibilities

Analyze new business opportunities and develop renewal strategies
Attain quote, premium, and division goals as assigned
Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers
Use critical thinking and problem‑solving skills to negotiate with brokers on placements
Travel to meet with brokers within assigned territory at least three times per year
Perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Effectively and properly select, evaluate, model, determine coverage, rate, document, quote, and bind accounts
Assess risk accurately
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Work independently or in a team environment to complete assignments within prescribed processes and standard underwriting practices
Solid knowledge of underwriting philosophy and techniques
Proven problem‑solving and decision‑making skills
Strong negotiation skills
Multi‑tasking ability
High level of initiative and motivation
Strong work ethic with a drive to succeed
Solid customer service and relationship‑building skills
Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and internet research
Experience and Education Associate Underwriter
Bachelor’s degree or a minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience
Industry‑associated classes or courses preferred
Underwriter
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
Minimum of 2 years of related underwriting experience, preferably in Excess and Surplus lines
Preferably pursuing coursework toward professional designations or continuing education
Senior Underwriter
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
Minimum of 5 years of underwriting experience, preferably in Excess and Surplus lines
Professional designation preferred
