Do you want to work directly in the community to support youth who are experiencing homelessness, crisis, or unsafe situations? Evergreen Youth & Family Services is hiring a Shelter Street Outreach Worker to engage runaway, homeless, and at‑risk youth and connect them to safety, shelter, and essential resources.
This full‑time, community‑based role blends street outreach with shelter support and is ideal for someone who is compassionate, dependable, and comfortable working in a variety of environments. You’ll spend much of your time meeting youth where they are—on foot and in agency vehicles—while helping ensure Evergreen’s shelter and Basic Center Program remain safe, responsive, and youth‑centered.
Schedule:
Full‑Time, 40 hours per week Status:
Non‑Exempt Supervisor:
Shelter Program Director Evening and weekend availability is required.
What You’ll Do as a Shelter Street Outreach Worker:
Conduct street‑based and community outreach to identify and engage youth and young families experiencing homelessness or unsafe situations
Spend approximately 50% of work hours in the community at known youth gathering locations
Provide crisis intervention, short‑term support, and guidance to youth in distress
Distribute basic needs items such as food, hygiene supplies, clothing, and resource information
Refer youth to shelter, healthcare, education, mental health services, and other community resources
Collaborate with schools, tribal programs, law enforcement, and community partners to support effective referrals
Assist with shelter operations as needed, including youth engagement, meals, and maintaining a safe environment
Track and document outreach contacts and services in required systems
Maintain outreach inventory and restock supplies
Report safety concerns or urgent situations to the Shelter Program Director
Participate in team meetings, supervision, and required trainings
What We’re Looking For:
Applicants 21 years of age or older
High school diploma or GED required (post‑secondary coursework in social services or related field preferred)
Experience working with youth or vulnerable populations preferred
Strong interpersonal, communication, and documentation skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Comfort working in community settings and varied conditions
Alignment with Evergreen’s mission and commitment to youth‑centered services
Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and ability to be insured on the agency auto policy
Additional Requirements:
Ability to lift up to 35 pounds
Successful completion of a Minnesota DHS background study
Drug and/or alcohol testing as required
Commitment to confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA and Data Privacy laws
Compensation & Benefits: Wage:
$15.50 – $20.50 per hour (DOQ) Evergreen also offers a competitive cash benefits package, generous vacation, holiday and sick time, 401(k) match, and flexible scheduling.
